Compressor Question

I recently bought an older Kellogg American compressor. I can hear the pressure leaking down through the air intake on the pump head. Do all compressors use a check valve between the pump and tank? Mine has been replumbed, and there is no valve. If the pump is leaking, is there an easy way to tell whether it's valves or rings or ?
