Compressor refitting

I took this old compressor and motor off this bad tank(a sin yes I know)

then I did this

all to plumb it into this new tank

the reason. Bc that new compressor motor is loud AF and I hate it. So I’ll give up a little room and try to make it look not to cobbled together just for a little quieter compressor

good for getting rid of that bad tank... But, if it was me, I would cut off the base from the tank and keep the motor & compressor on it.
you can use an angle grinder & wheel to cut the welds. or if you don't have one, a good reason to buy one! LOL

Well there’s a reason I kept the base on the bad tank. My friend wants to try and fix it so he can put his compressor on the red tank

but I have ran into a little problem. What the heck size is this fitting on my compressor

could it be 1/2 bolt thread and not Pipe thread.ntp.

that is not pipe thread, you took a pipe off of there, either flare or compression or some type of shoulder on the pipe?
and if your tank is bad, please, please don't let your friend try to fix it.

The old outlet fitting on the pump was probably a compression fitting, you can usually get new rings to fit the copper pipe at the big box stores, but it looks like you already changed it out with different fittings.

You can buy OEM tanks for like for like swap, but honestly for the cost you can almost just buy a whole new compressor.

Yep it was compression. So far I’m into it maybe $40. Trying to get the wiring done now then maybe another run back to the hardware store

120 pounds per square inch... There's a lot of square inches surface area on a tank... Figure roughly 5,500 sq/in surface area of a 60 gallon tank x 120 psi = 660,000 pounds of force pushing out on the tank...

Yea one of these days I’m going to get some plate steel and mount it up. But my current dilemma is a blown hose. I rigged up a flexzilla hose from the pump to the tank and on the third trial run it blew a hole. I’ll cut and fix it tomorrow then try again. If that don’t work I’ll have to try and rig up black pipe. FYI do t go to lowes looking for plumbing parts

Yeah, you might need to make a little aftercooler using a coil of copper tubing before running it to a flex hose.

Wow! I knew there was a lot of force inside an air tank but not that much. I have a 200 gal tank and the numbers grow exponentially 5,544,000 lbs of force.

But all that matters is the pressure stretching the metal. For example, in theory I could run a mile long length of copper 1/2 pipe. The total force in lbs on that pipe would be crazy. but if you look at the cross sectional pressure that's all that maters. The big one that gets you is large cross sectional areas. So if you increase the diameter of the pipe by double, the force on the copper wall goes up by ~4 because the area of the cross section went up by ~4. Thus a really large diameter cylindrical tank will have a lot more stress on the wall vs the same pressure in a smaller diameter tank.

That fitting is "UN". Either UNC or UNF. (coarse or fine)
You've got something else there now, but for future reference, a hydraulic hose shop can fix you up. It usually needs an O-ring to seal it.

Yep it’s all different now. I do have a hydraulic hose out of the pump and into a new tank not pics yet it’s not all completed

the heat will blister the rubber inside the Hyd Hose and it will fail also. You need a copper line from the pump to the tank.

You may be right. We shall see. I’m about sick of this thing. My friend had a Campbell housfield the is uber quite I might go buy one and plumb it into my tank. If this hydraulic hose melts or blows I’ll be at my breaking point to do so.

Looks like you decided to keep the base from your old tank, good! Now the old tank shouldn't become a time bomb...

Anyway, I did the same thing last year. Got a good tank off craigslist, then cut off the base plate from my tank. Then I welded in some angle iron under the base to drill mounting holes that lined up with the new tank, and bolted in place. Finally some new copper line from the compressor to the tank, and a nice junction block (after the pic) for the output.

Yes I kept everything I could one day I’ll hook the old control back up and plumb it to the new tank. The stand I built is kinda cattywampus but it works. I might stain it with used motor oil or paint it
