Compressor Setup Thread

A while ago I was perusing the vast array of info in the Garage Journal forums and stumbled across a thread that was something like "Let's see your Compressor set ups".

There was a bit of info in that thread that I want to borrow and I can't seem to find that thread again.

Can anyone help a blind squirrel find a thread?

Sorry, neither of those are the thread I'm looking for. In that elusive thread was a post that showed where someone had added a warning light to indicate that his compressor is still switched on. The person ran the 110v for the warning light off one leg of the 220v running his compressor.

I know how to do this as I've already got a 110v fan being turned on when my compressor kicks on (to take heat off my franzinator). I was thinking I could use the other 110v leg to illuminate the HITOYC (Hey idiot, turn off your compressor) light. The problem is the power for the light will only be available when the compressor is actually running. I'm not in my workshop much during the week, so it's possible that I could accidentally leave my compressor running for days (which I've done many times now).

I'm curious how that person, using one of the 110v legs, got around this.

My plan B is to install an air pressure switch, something like this,

I figure I can drill and tap into one of the aluminum blocks the air outlets are plumbed to. The switch will close while the air pressure is above 60psi. I'd run a small LED or low amp light through the switch contacts, and position the light where I'll see it as I switch off the shop lights. If the compressor is on, its always above 80psi, so the light will be lit. The light will remain lit until the compressor bleeds down below the threshold pressure of the switch. At the very least, it will be visual indicator for me to make sure the compressor is powered down.

An old guy I knew, long since dead, had the perfect solution for this. He had a very small sign by the light switch at the door that read "IS COMPRESSOR OFF?" He never forgot.

I used to have a similar purpose sign, well not quite a sign, but a decal, on the gauge panel on my car that read, "Where is your front wheel?"

Back in the early 80's, I was a semi-pro bicycle racer and carried my bikes on the car roof. The carrier system I used back then had fork stands and required the front wheel to be removed. Guess how many times, after a race, I loaded the bike on the roof, backed out of my parking space . . . and ran over my front wheel that I'd left propped against the rear bumper? It's a good thing I was also the manager of a bicycle store and and an expert at building (or rebuilding) bicycle wheels.

I think I might sharpie this on the light switch plate and over the door knob to my shop. Just recently added a wall mount switch to turn on the compressor that's outside.
