so i just rebuilt my compressor
started her up, got to about 60 psi then the belt started to slip and motor started to stall
tightened up the belt and tried again, gets to about 95-100 and the same thing
should i tighten it some more? what is the best way of tightening these things?
thanks

As far as tightening the belt, you can adjust the motor with the belt(s) off the pulley. Once you tighten down the motor, simply roll the belt(s) back on.

I don't know about that. For a v-belt, rolling the belt on means you can roll the belt off & if you can roll it off in most cases it's probably way too loose.

I smell what you're steppin' in, but I've used this procedure many times. Usually, it's quite a ***** to get the belt to roll on. I could use an extra pair of hands most of the time.

I used a couple of wooden wedges to force the pump away from the motor. Bolt the pump down tight and then the motor almost tight, then tap the wedges in parallel to each other, until the belt was at the required tension, then tighten the motor down firmly.

When you say you rebuilt the compressor, what did you do to it? Is it possible that the clearances inside of that pump might be too tight? Something not right causing more restriction that what it should have?

I would also have to ask if this 'system' is factory motor, pump, and pulleys or is it a fabricated system built from parts on hand? Have you checked the AMP draw while running? Did you break in the pump under no load if it has new rings in it?

What did it do before you rebuilt it? Why did you do the work, were you repairing something or just freshening it up? Did it spin up and turn off before you worked on it?

Trying to figure out if something you did could have possibly caused it, or the problem was there before and you worked on it to see if you could fix it?

And yes as said above, that motor is very small for most average sized compressors. Was this combination, motor and pump, used together or did someone do this combo?

If the reed valves were dirty/carbon up and not working properly before then you have just give your motor more work to do now that you have better sealing, in saying this the motor must have been on the raged edge of its output before anyway with that compressor, are you sure you have assembled the valves correctly? this is assuming you have correctly tensioned belts though.

I would check the tank check valve,if it is carboned up or burnt out you can have issues with too much head pressure. give it a look see.

Does it have the same motor that was on it before you rebuilt it? If so then I would say the belts are too loose. If the belt is old you may try a new one also. I use to work for a small tool repair shop and we worked on lots of compressors. I would generally use a small scissor style jack that is found in small cars. Place a small block of wood on each pulley and then place the jack between them, this may take two people to set up. Slowly expand (raise) the jack to tighten the belts. Just be careful not to overtighten and damage the pulleys. Good luck.

so i got it fixed, i thought it was too loose then i got the idea to clip it when it was tight and it was pulling about 12a at 0psi
then i loosened it off and got it down about 8a the first time and would only pump to 80psi
then i loosened it off some more and it was pulling around 6.8a then started to increase until about 8a at 110 psi
i rebuilt the compressor because one of the reed valves was broken and this is a twin cylinder single stage compressor

I put a larger drive pulley on the motor, it works fine. just didn't want to buy a new 5 horse motor. Also might need a new belt or belt dressing spray.

How cold is it in your building? When mine is cold 10-20 degrees it starts hard and starts slipping the belt.
