I bought a Quincy 325 roc 10 on a 60 gallon binks horizontal tank pretty cheap to just have the compressor pump. The tank tag is 1968 and once I looked inside and saw all the rust on the bottom there is no way I feel comfortable with my life even if it did pass a home hydro test.

The farm I used to work at has 2 year model 2008 120 gallon ingersol rand tanks that are in mint condition and always had automatic tank drains on the bottom of them since new . They are Manchester “U “ tanks 200 psi rated at 650 degrees , .184 shell and .149 heads . They have always been in a heated covered room while being used and they stopped using them last December . Would you guys feel comfortable using one of these given the info ?

Don't see anything wrong with the IR tank based on the numbers you provided. What does it look like inside? You wrote the older one off because of the rust inside it, what about the IR? Newer doesn't mean better 100% of the time without a visual inspection.

I will have to inspect the new one still first . The newer one is slightly thicker according to the tag . What about materials on newer tanks vs older . Is one material better ? 8b7f5d3aa3785ad775b45e1a08218d14.jpg939a0d97a2ca6788c0d780c27094d5ce.jpg

Your lucky to find a newer tank in good shape. I literally just went down the same path with my Binks horizontal tank as well. Same date. Mine had an obvious leak though. I couldn't find anything used so I had to shell out for a brand new one.

Not sure how much material have changed in the past 50 years.

Here is what my circa 1944 nameplate reads:

Hydro test for comfort either way. A rusted tank will leak at a weak point before it fast-fractures if its built to ASME specifications.

Honestly lots of rust used to scare me... But with a hydro test of 80-100 psi or so more then you will be using it at it doesnt scare me so much anymore.
