Headed to the shop sunday morning and heard a motor running..its kicked a belt off a time or two so I assumed it was my compressor..get to it, sure enough, motor humming, belt laying in the floor..but whats that? there is a tennis ball sized hole in the side of the compressor case..one rod is broke, crankshaft broke in half, rear bearing is dislodged.. I didn't take any pictures yet, but this is a porter cable upright, 80 gallon I think..bummer........

My compressors are never switched on when I'm not in the garage. It is a total waste to be running them with nobody using the air. I run them when they are being used only.
That way, I never come into the garage and find a compressor running that isn't needed.

Sorry for the damage. I know many folks leave everything charged up and running when they leave. I'm in the other group that shuts everything off. Hope you get one thing bigger and better.

I have a shutoff on each drop with no leaks it only runs when used.

I run my craftsman out of oil two summers ago. took off the belt, unstuck it by hand and went back to work. The cylinder is scared and it puts pressure into the case but still works, keep it as a backup.
