people are first going to ask for photos, model #, etc. Just get all this ready while you're waiting for answers, and edit your post to include them.

It says BK industries from toronto canada..can't find any other info..has a new 5 hp leeson motor".....tank says 1984.. Don't know if they would have actually built the pumps there or just assembled the compressor..pump may be a brand name that they just put their sticker on I'm not sure..tried to up load photos they show up but then only one go on attachment..

Air continuously leaking back through the pump indicates a bad check valve at minimum.

So the breather cap where the air is coming out you can see in the previous photo just beside the pulley

It does sound like one of the output valves on the compressor head is leaking, pressurizing the cylinder which is leaking past the rings and out the crankcase breather.

Some types of compressor pumps rely upon the output valve(s) on the pump as their check valve into the tank.

Ya I read a quick article just mentioning rings..the pump up time is quick so I'm thinking and hoping it's not the rings and just the valve is maybe stuck or dirt in it..it looks like there is no check valve on supply to the tank..I guess an easy fix would be to install one??

The proper way would be to fix the valve on the pump, but this may require some special tools and there would be a cost of parts involved plus the time & labor involved.

You certainly could install a secondary check valve - no unloader would be required on this line since the leaky valve on the pump would allow the residual pressure in that line to dissipate as it is currently doing. This is probably the quickest way to remedy the situation.
