Compressor Wiring Question

I have a 80 gallon CH compressor with a 5HP Emerson continuous run motor rated for 22 amps. I noticed in the instruction manual that they want 8 gauge wire supplied to it. But then I noticed the short run wire for the motor coming off the unloader is only 10 gauge. Why would they want 8? Are they making up for possible long runs or covering their butts?

The 10 is suitable for where and what it is and provided by the mfg as part of the unit, the code does call for 8 for supply. Its kind of a niche spot in regards to listing, they are installed on 10/30 all the time though.
The 8 would be for a cable, could be 10 in pipe.

In addition to above, to complete installation by code, it should be hard wired, no plugs, and a disconnect added if more than 50 feet from panel or if panel is out of sight.
