Can I use an existing run that leads to my welder, junction off that and run a 22amp compressor that will be switched off when not in use?
I have 6ga to the Lincoln that has a 50 breaker in the panel. this will also run the compressor when welder is not in use.
I'm will hard wire to the compressor switched and a contactor.

If compressor motor has its own overload protection then it's okay. Hardwire the compressor with the same size wire as the circuit.

Wouldn't it need to be wired big enough for the motor? I can't recall if I see motors that side with own thermal and its been a look long time since I read it. But,, as we read in other threads over size wire may require different grounding , seems like maybe using a 10 whip would meet the intent???
But,,, since this looks piped on surface,, and I had panel spaces would be inclined to run a circuit for the comp. What welder is this? If I didn't have panel spaces this might be e time and place I might be inclined to make them.

I didn't want to make a ******* situation out of it by suggesting a #10 whip. If the motor doesn't have thermal overload (red reset button) on it then it should have it's own circuit sized to the motor HP.

I believe 5 hp still allows 50A. Personally not a huge fan of running it a lot higher than needed.
I also don't care for plug/unplug and this calls for hardwire, would so much rather have a circuit for it. It's just natural for me to add the circuit for additional equipment, just part of the plan from the start.
Doing one for a guy now that the utilities are the last after thought.
First thing on my mind is getting power established, maybe even air, cover for tools and material.

I believe I will add a new line with appropriate ga wire and breaker.
I found the hp ratings funny label on tank, 5rhp! Rating on motor? 6hp?! They got it backwards!! It may not even be 5, who knows now a days, it does have a red button, so that says something.
Compressor tech told them motor is bad, it had a burnt contact on pressure switch, so I will add a new switch and a contactor. Compressor cost me 250!!
Sberry, the welder is a 175 Squarewave.
Thank you for the pointers guys, very much appreciated. Love this forum, allways, always lurking.

post a pic of the nameplate.

Sounds like the pressure switch was not rated for the 5HP of the motor. This is why motor starters are a better setup for large motors.

If it ends up running after minor repairs, then you got a good deal
