I'm in the same boat in ways. This weekend my 18yo lux air, 3hp, 30gal compressor developed a pinhole near the drain. I'm shopping CL and new units inline. In the $500-$700 range they all look the same,

Single stage,
3.0-5.0 hp
60gal tank
Some oil less some not
Max psi 135 to 155

Except for the IR SS5L5, they all weight about the same. The IR is hefty 450lbs.

In this price range, all they are going to be pretty much the same? Mexican motors, steel tanks, single stage? Are there brands more reliable than the others? Husky, IR, industrial air, Puma, powermate?

Thank you,
Jeff

I move every 2.5-3 yrs. No choice.
Look at Northern Tools or Compressors Direct. I ordered my Quincy online. I went as big as I could get away with it. 2 stage lubed. Got tired of the oilless ****. I dumped a gallon of linseed oil inside and then drained it. Let it dry for a few days. The bottom bowl is the first area to develop pinhole leaks IME.

Besides the nice coat of linseed, I added an auto drain.

Post pics when you get one.

So I now have the HF 5hp 60gal.

Current setup:
It is wired through a 50a plug with 8/3 to a 40a 2 pole 240v breaker.*@#$ Vibration isolators are due to arrive today, it needs it. It is not yet bolted to the slab since, while it is in the right spot, I am undecided about its rotation. *@#$It is plumbed with a street 90 to a close ****** to a full port ball valve to a 6 inch ****** to a regulator/filter to a quick connect, all brass all 1/2". *@#$The switch is factory set at about 165 and 120 psi. *@#$It takes 58 seconds to recover.

Some thoughts about it:

The good:price.
At 800, best value I have found.

Not nearly as loud as I thought it would be.

Well built.

It has a bit of a rumble and slab vibration which *@#$I expect the to go away when I put it on isolators.

Compared to what I have been using, this thing is a beast.

The bad:

The terminals in the switch housing look like the are for maybe 12 ga wire with the ground screw even smaller.*@#$ It was a struggle to get the 8ga in the terminals.*@#$ I had to drill a separate hole for the ground and anchor with a small bolt, washers and a nut.

The indifferent:
Would have been nice if the air outlet was 3/4".*@#$ It is 1/2".

The tank pressure gauge is next to the pressure switch which is under the edge of the *@#$motor/pump bracket.*@#$ Hard to see right now since the tank is currently oriented so I am parallel to the belt.*@#$ I think I may rotate the tank 90 so the belt is perpendicular to me so that the switch and the gauge are facing me.

The future:
Going to add a ****** to the oil drain to extend it from the pump.*@#$ Right now it is a bit messy to change the oil since the plug is relatively flush to the pump and doesnt allow the funnel to sit properly,

Havent added a tank drain yet but will.

Will extend the plumbing from the regulator to a flex hose to hard pipe (undecided on material) to two drops plus a retracting reel.

A week in....would buy it again
