I just found out I can make a "phase" symbol ø :bounce:
Anybody know where I can find a list of any other symbols that can be made by holding down ALT and other keys?
Google was not much help.
Thanks!

alt+0186(º) or alt+0176(°) makes a nice degree symbol.

I have been told that alt+0186 is not actually a degree emblem, but it works well for that. If you want to see more, open Character Map under Accessories and click the symbol you are interested in, in the lower right hand corner it will tell you the alt keystroke, if one is set for that character.

I use (alt+248)° and (alt+0216)Ø often.

Interesting!
I just found out what the ALT key is for.
I'm know very little about computers. I'm not proud to say that a 10 year old kid probably knows as much as me about this tool known as a computer. I use it for what I need and often feel like such a newbie. :headscrat
Thanks for the above link!

D'r bu iss nuch tzu yung, und ar wart al ferhoodled.

Actually, my grandmother was Deutsch, but out in Ohio... She spoke nothing but German until she was in first or second grade. My parents moved out this way from Ohio and Michigan, so I'm not a native... :)

But I have friends that still speak a fair amount of Dutchie...

Nix sprecken, just imported the woff unit from the ABE area, and sold enough old iron to the old order boys from the NY/Pa border to get myself appointed an Honorary Amishman. I even have the secret key to the Amish Internet, and the number to their cellphones.

I drove them boys nuts when I was loading equipment for them, every time they stopped talkin English, I shut the forklift down. Hard enough makin some picks on machines when everybody is on the same language.

Talk about bringing a thread back from the dead.....but I could not resist a big thanks for this one, came in very handy today in a document the required a large number of Single Phase notations in a very small limited character field. It turned into 1Ø very nicely! I found the following note which now is pasted to my wall at work:

http://usefulshortcuts.com/downloads/ALT-Codes.pdf

I have also attached the pdf for direct download.

I use this one work. It amazes me how many people don't know about the character map.

If you're using a later Windows operating system, just click "run" and type in "charmap" and the application will pop up.

I used to have most of them memorized because I used them writing code for a chat program.

They will cause problems sometimes - pay attention if you get a little "error message" that pops up before you click "save" on a file.

for "degrees" = alt+167

[tutorial] push and hold "alt" key and type 1-6-7 (or what ever number combination you need) the symbol should appear in the text - release keys

Cool. always wanted to do that...

btw, it only works with the number pad, not the number keys on the qwerty side of the board...

IIRC it only works with the number pad and the NUM KEY has to be activated.
(NUM KEY = NUM LOCK)

winner winner :rocker:
I forgot that part - I always use the number pad and rarely if ever use the qwerty keys

Are you holding the alt key while you press the ASCII character number code? On my end, when I am typing when i reach the point that I want the symbol, I press AND hold the Alt key ant the charter magically appears only after I release the ALT key. ☺☻♥♦♣♠
That is 1,2,3,4, 5

What's wrong with using the Character Map that comes with Windows. In Windows 10, the Character Map is in the Windows Accessory grouping. It will show you what characters are available for a given font. In the lower right of that app, it shows the Alt+## for that character.
