Hey gang,

I am building a gate to look like a fence....blend in.....but the gate has to open out. A while ago when I first was looking at options I saw what I think was a heavy duty hinge made for this.....I cannot find it now. Basically a large version of a concealed cabinet hinge. I think you do lose some opening room. I have seen the ones that get recessed into the jam and frame.....they don't look heavy duty enough. I guess I could make my own with some bullet hinges.....not sure of the math involved in needing clearance to go around a 3" post. Maybe someone has done this before?.....or can guide me to a better solution?

thanks
Tomstir

You could use a swing clear hinge if you need the extra width.
I think those are the ones to allow the door to open in a larger arc.....for more room for like a wheelchair. Those still have the hinges exposed to the outside. thank you

Look up ‘hidden hinges ‘ for hot rods.
They would not be hard to make and adapt to a fence/gate
Yes....something like that....very helpful thanks.

Those are nice, but they get recessed into the jams.....I'm not sure they are strong enough for a heavy exterior gate.

I need to find a better diagram or pic of the hot rod hinge. This is a drawing that got me thinking that I can no longer find.

Do you have a video or how to instructions? My googlefu is not working!!!
Quick youtube search yielded this......https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9CBZQ8hvTcQ
You can just as easily mount the tabs to the backs instead of IN the jamb.......as well as bend the steel as in your pic. Many show trucks on bags have a liftable steel bed floor with simple handbuilt hinges very similar.

What's concealed about that hinge layout?
Can’t see it from the outside.
yes. I guess it could be called hidden too?....in some of my searches they used the term concealed......mainly showed cabinet hinges.....which is what I need a bigger version of.

Thanks. Everything seems to point to making or buying some kind of hinge/rotational unit and then bending a section of material to fit when closed and clear post when opened.

Maybe post a picture of what you mean. Concealed cabinet hinges can be a lot of things. If you just don't want to see them from the outside, several of the suggestions above should work. If there's something you have in mind post it so we can look for a heavy duty version
