Concrete Building

Hi all,

I've been a lurker here for awhile and have learned a lot when it came to renovating my house and building a 8x16 shed on skids. New project coming up probably spring time. We breed dogs and need a building to house them. What we want is to have a building that we can spray down the inside/outside to clean and keep sanitized. So concrete or block.

My initial idea is to have a slab poured with a steep slope to a center drain and smooth finish. Then lay block to build the walls up about 5 ft and then go to stick framing above that. Not sure how hokey that would look though so maybe go block all the way up. I say block because it requires tools that I already have saving me that money and also something i can slowly work on myself even without a lot of masonry experience. I rarely pay someone to do work for us.

What problems do you guys see me running into with this idea?

I attached a picture with my initial design so you can see what we'll be using the building for.

I would go to a few SPCA's and see how they build ....

My local chapter has an area that looks somewhat like your proposed. They use it for the larger dogs -- the inside is heated with an outside pen area -- w/ dog door. They blocked the walls (must be 10 feet) w/ open common roof above all the pens --- the block is epoxy paint .. not the concrete floor.

There is a drain in the back corner of each inside pen -- the outside has a linear drain that goes down the middle of all the pens. I assume it must all go to a septic system.

They whole thing can be easily sprayed down and sanitized. Having the drain in the back corner makes this easier -- the linear drain outside allows the pen height to be equal at each end. When they walk the dogs they take them out the outside pen gate -- so this need to be clean.

It looks like you will not have a fully enclosed area.

CMU sound good to me. Use a high build coating/sealer to make cleaning easier.
What breed dogs?

CMU? Sorry not up to speed on all the abbreviations.

We breed AKC and Non-AKC Labs. We do both for people that want a nice pet but don't want to pay high AKC prices.

That's a good idea, there is a pet boarding/grooming place here in town. Maybe I'll go see how they are setup.
