Concrete Contractor in Upstate NY?

Does anyone have any recommendations for decent (dare I say good?) concrete contractors in the upstate NY area? Have family up that way and they are having a heck of a time getting anyone to even show up.

Maybe I don't understand the business or the market, but they've tried everything from folks recommended by the city to contractors who did good work for their friends and neighbors, but have come up empty handed each time. The vast majority do not return calls, and every one of them that has scheduled an appointment has no-showed, several of them multiple times.

Pretty simple job, they're wanting to pour a slab in a barn, nothing fancy. They've not quibbled or shopped on price with anyone, just can't find anyone that will show up and work. First guy that shows up is going to get the job, so it's not a high bar to meet at this point.

Anyone that can recommend a contractor who actually returns calls and shows up for appointments, let me know and I will gladly pass it along.

Depends on what you mean by Upstate NY, to some upstate is anything north of Manhattan, to others it means above or west of Albany.

For some people I live in upstate NY but there’s still 300 miles north of me.

Lots of contractors are really busy right now and this is also the season where some start taking time off. You might try going down to the city/county building department and asking if they will give you three referrals. The inspectors know who is doing work and what quality. Also ask your pastor or rabbi etc., if he knows of any GC's in the congregation. Then ask them who they use.

Yeah so just to be clear, they've done all of this already, for about the last year, actually. Seasonality seems to have little effect, people just no-show all year round. The guys recommended by the city were by far the worst ones as far as communication.

When I said people made appointments and no-showed multiple times? Yeah that was a guy recommended by the city AND one of their friends who knew this guy personally, not just as a former customer. He won't even return his friend's calls. Must be nice to have that much work.

Again, if anyone has any recommendations for a contractor, I will happily pass it on.

Find the local concrete ready mix company or companies. The folks who make the wet concrete and put it in the truck. Contact the office and ask for the sales manager. Inquire with him (or her).

He didn't ask for money until the job was done either. Tell him Greg on Ridgeway sent you. The only way he gets his work is through referrals that says a lot. Good luck!

Well, as an update, George Brown asked my parents to be up early so he could come by at 7am and then he no-showed on them. It's now almost 12 hours later, and not so much as a phone call from the clown.

Maybe you can give him a call and inquire as to why he jerks people around after asking you to recommend him? Not your fault of course, but I feel pretty bad having asked my folks to work with him now.

Sorry that happened. I had a good experience with him, which is why I passed his name along. I cannot control how he conducts his business. Although its no excuse, this is a very busy time of the year for concrete.

I'm sure I'll be offending a few people here but we've had nothing but horrible experience with contractors in upstate NY (Delaware County). Many of them have no clue what they're doing. Some of them just work to support they're opioid addiction, and just about all of them are incredibly lazy.
We had a very large project on our home and had a very tough time finding a contractor. When we did, the guy took the deposit ($13k) did about one day of work (which was actually more damage than work) and then took off with the cash. We sued them and won..but got nothing because the guy didn't have a pot to piss in. Second contractor spend 2+ years working on the house before we finally fired him and called in a favor from some family friends who have a construction business in Brooklyn. They finished the work in 3 days.

So you're not alone. Sorry I don't have any recommendations for you. If you do find someone, I'd try to pay for the materials myself and pay the smallest deposit possible. Or tell that that you'll give them the deposit when they show up for the job.

This is standard operating procedure for these guys. They all do it.

I have a great concrete guy that I've used several times, but I can't count on him to show up or call when he's supposed to. But, he does great work for a good price. I just tell him the date I absolutely have to have it by, and give him plenty of notice. He eventually gets it done, so I just live with it.

One time he showed up at my house at 7PM on a Sunday to start excavating.
