I'm in the process of moving to here in N.C. from N.Y. and need a garage/shop roughed in to facilitate the move. I can do the framing, interior and services myself. Looking for any recommendations for a concrete contractor to do the slab and some block in this area.

My current shop (N.Y.) is on a monolithic slab with 3 courses of block and works well for me so looking to duplicate this slab but larger.

I also see some do footings, block than fill with the slab. So I don't know which is better or more economical in this area of N.C.

Shop will 3 car size but only 2 10x10 OHDs center with lift and right side for car storage, left side for shop space. Twelve foot ceilings and two man doors.

So any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Around here I would just go with a 6" slab and re barb the perimeter then build your walls from there. NC has a ton of hard clay and a shallow frost line.

Thanks Cudaboy, The spot I need to build the garage is about 18" below the grade of the driveway so I might have to bring in some fill material to raise it level and compact it. All clay here, they tell me frostline is maybe 12" but I need to check as I am close to an area that is 18".

This is why I figure if I can get a local concrete guy here he would be in the know. I did have a 4" slab poured in a car port here by a driveway guy but a few small issues so would not be my choice for a structural slab.

I did my own prep in N.Y. (much tougher) but had a friends equipment and knowledge to borrow as needed.

The search continues.

Thanks SRoberts006, I know where they are, hard to miss all that red, just looks like they are too big for my small job. I'll drive over that way and stop by, never hurts to just ask. I'm looking for this fall to start so maybe if they have a slot to keep a few guys busy for a few days might be something to it.

I live here and friends have used Pedulla with success. Doggett is another I've had good experience with. Love to see your Garage/shop as it progresses.

I can give you a contractor NOT to use. Sperling Concrete is terrible, I would not let him pour a pad for a dog house. He outright lied and did a poor job on my shop driveway.

Thanks guys for this info, this is just why I figure to ask here, local knowledge and experience can't be beat.

As soon as I can get the project rolling I'll chronicle it here. I will first get the concrete done, frame it myself, contract out the roof, finish the services and interior myself. It will be slow but will be posted here as I move along.

Thanks again

Welcome to NC! I just moved here last year and love it here. Mooresville is a great area. I'm just North east of Concord, kind of out in the sticks.

Anyway, I'm also looking for a contractor as well. So if these guys will come over to the Concord area I will check them out. Following this thread for sure!

OH!!! And I see you are an early 911 guy! We need to talk! :D

Hi scootermcrad, I've been visiting here for about 35 years and finally came to my senses. Next trip up north I'll be getting my house on the market. I'm in the agricultural side of Mooresville on a deadend road surrounded by lots of woods but only 3 miles from the village. More populated than where I am in N.Y. but quieter here.

My inlaws lived in Concord most of my visiting years near Roberta Church Rd. not too far from the Speedway.

I need my garage here to move all my cars and equipment to so I can vacate the north. So the search is on for a contractor.

I'll pm you later.

Out of curiosity have you gone down to the planning/zoning board about your build. Sometimes they can give a good suggestion on a contractor. Also you might want to check with a local engineer. When I had to rodo my garage (total nightmare with the county but that's what you get with a foreclose purchase -anyhow-) I found a local engineer who suggested a few local concrete contractors and told me who not to use.
