Concrete dust is driving me crazy!

I built a garage last year. 24x36, the largest I could go in town here.

Anyhow, I poured the slab myself with the help of a couple of friends. We did a broom finish on the floor.

I did not seal, coat, paint, or epoxy coat the floor at all.

I'm having a huge issue with concrete dust. My shop is so incredibly dusty, it's insane. I guess i figured that the dust would eventually wear away, but it isn't...in the slightest.

Am I correct in assuming that some sort of concrete sealer will take care of my dust issue? I'm not concerned with having an epoxy finish, or a nice paint finish or whatever, I just want to cut down on the concrete dust.

Am I going to need to sand the slab, or can I just give it a good brooming/vacuuming/ and hosedown?

Thanks.

Keith

If all you want to do is put a sealer down for concrete dust control I'd hit Menards, Lowes, or Home Depot and look in their paint departments for a concrete sealer. They'll have a product that should work. A better concrete sealer would be found at a concrete yard, if they will sell it to non-contractors. One product that I've used that works well is call "Tiah" not available at the home improvement type stores but more for contractors. Tiah can either be sprayed on with a aproved pump up sprayer or rolled on with a solvent approved roller nap.

You may have to sand or grind the floor to remove the soft and powdery surface before applying any product. If the floor is constantly dusting, sanding down to a more solid surface will help ensure the products adhesion. Applying over something powdery will be like painting sand- a waste of time. Sand or grind until the loose material is removed, wash and clean the floor and apply the product according to manufacturers instructions.

If you're happy with the concrete surface and it isn't loaded with oil stains, spills, or the like, I believe a good pressure washing is all you need before applying your sealer.
