concrete grinding and dust

I need some suggestions to control the dust from grinding. Background on what iv'e done so far. This is a basement area conversion. Flooring was carpet glued down, I scraped up the underlayment by handscraper, which cleaned up so so. Purchased a diamond wheel for my 5" angle grinder and had at it, well for a real short time. Filled the 12 x 16 or so room with enough dust that I could barely see across the room. Waited half a day or so till the dust settled and tried wetting the concrete down, with more or less the same result. Seems the grinder penetrates through the moisture layer quickly and creates a similiar dust cloud once in hits dry concrete layer.

I've been wearing a respirator but can still smell traces of the dust, so I'm worried about exposure here. I've also been running a small house fan to exhaust dust out the window, not much help there either.

Any suggestions how to approach this?

thanks for the replies. I'll take a look at my local HD and see what they offer in a dust collection scenario as I would prefer to stay away from introducing water into this area, I already have a moisture problem in the basement.

Quickly glanced at the videos, will take more time tomorrow and try to get a game plan together.

Most Home Depot rental stores will keep a self cleaning drywall sanding vac system on hand, the self cleaning filter is necessary for the amount of dust you are talking about. With all the new silica dust standards being enforced this year by osha it shouldn’t be hard to find a 7in grinder with a vac or even a walk behind floor grinder and vac.

You need a dust shroud for your grinder, a shop vac, and a Dust Deputy. This article has links to these products along with a video of how the Dust Deputy works.

Very good info!!

This dust can be deadly over time. Our install company uses a $5000.00 Pulse-Bac machine to perform work for customers. It's that important.
