Concrete installation insurance

Yet another thread posted on GJ about a poorly installed concrete garage floor. It seems these are common today.

While there is an excellent thread on here from LLWillysFan, Concrete underground, about concrete slab installation there is little available to guide buyers about concrete contractor selection and checking quality of workmanship. In other forms of business and life there are online ratings and even insurance to protect the purchaser. There are online ratings for doctors, lawyers, restaurants and construction companies but not for the skilled people whose quality of work is more important than the name of the company they work for today. And don't suggest Linked-in as it is a self-managed site.

Concrete work seems like a "fly by night operation" performed by people who do not know what they are doing but are willing to take thousands of dollars from you to learn their trade. They never fix their mistakes and you are left with a poor quality installation.

What do others thing about this idea...

Buyers of concrete work could purchase concrete installation insurance so that if the concrete installation goes bad within 5 years the insurance would cover the cost of repair or replacement. Here is how to get rid of the bad actors, the insurance company would provide a list to the buyer of local companies with "certified concrete installers". Using one of these named companies, insures the buyer that the installation will be covered if something is not right within 5 years of installation.

Poor concrete jobs are not really common, they just seem to be when bad jobs are posted on the internet. I just had my floor done by a guy whose name I was given by a member of my local community facebook page. No website, no name on truck, I didn't ask for references, just his name and his crew of guys. I met with him and went with my gut feeling and hired him to do it. Did a fantastic job and a great group of guys. All he asked for at the end was for me to give out his name, because that's how he gets his work.

I have a similar story, except I found my guy in the phone book. I spoke with at least 20 people before I hired him. He came out to my house and spoke competently about his trade. He did good work at a fair price.

Insurance would be a tough sell. Everything is subjective. I hade some divots in my floor and was fine with it. The next guy could see the insurance as a reason to have it all ripped out. In other words lots of pansies bitching about stupid stuff. Also things can go wrong for tons of reasons so a guy that just did your buddies sheet of glass floor might not replicate on yours
