Concrete pad replacement.

Hey guys, I'm going to be replacing a section of my driveway this year it's about 25' x 12'. With a 4 inch thickness, and gravel with reinforcing wire. I think it totaled out right at 4.00 cubic yards. Now this may be a dumb question, but should I see if a ready mix company will even deliver that small of a load? Also, should I look at the big box stores on bagged concrete. I know it's more labor intensive with the bags, but I don't know if I can get delivery for that small of a load. Plus if they do deliver I'm not sure if it would be comparable to the bags, which I know would be at a discount for buying so many.

I hope this is in the right section, I was going to ask this in the flooring section.

They will deliver that although it will most likely be a "short" load so they charge more. Meaning a typical concrete truck holds 7-9cyds so it won't be a full load they charge you a fee. One thing I would look for is if someone close by is doing a concrete job and you could biggie back on there job. You can usually get a good price this way from the contractor.

Around here, minimum load is 3 cu/yd. A concrete smaller than 3 yards, you get hit with a smal load charge.

They'll ask you want mix you want, just tell them it's for a driveway, they'll know what you need.

Just my opinion, but I would frame with 2x6 for a 5.5 thickness over a compacted gravel base. With a rebar grid.

Order a little extra (like .5 yd) just in case. Have a plan for where to use the extra if you don't need it.

Most concrete places will deliver small loads but they will also charge an
'under load" fee. Maybe the cost of bagged concrete is cheaper but consider the time, effort and equipment required to mix that much concrete. Those little bags of premix concrete make 1/2 cu/ft each. Portland concrete, gravel, sand and water more per bag...then you need to rent/own a mixer or a large trough to mix it in.
If you want to make a days work, then mix your own. Want a more consistant mix, use a truck. You can also add fiber to the mix to strengthen the mix along with your steel mesh or rebar.

Yeah, I'm gonna do the truck option unless it just isn't available. If I did the bags, I would have to use the crack resistant mix. At least according to Quikrete's website, which calls for 167 bags, and I don't think that the big stores would be able to discount it enough to compete. Being in the St. Louis area, I have a lot of options.

Hell, I still have to jack hammer up the old pad, and dispose of it. Just use the extra money for that. The 2 x 6 isn't a bad idea, but I'm trying to get the home ready to sell. I'm gonna put down a gravel base, and then lay reinforcement wire on that. I would think that'll hold up for awhile.

Go for a better mix. 4000LB is not much more than 2500LB footer mix and is a lot stronger when exposed to weather and traffic.

I have used the mix onsite guys a couple of times. They have a truck with the dry goods on it and it mixes as it pours. The full truck is the same price as premix but if you only want a yard the prices goes up per yard. They do color too.

I can't speak for every market, but around here, there is a 1 yard minimum, a sliding scale for "cartage" charges between 1.25 and 4.75 yards, and no cartage fees over 5 yards. I've had as little as 1/2 yard batched before, but I picked it up at the plant, and I have an excellent relationship with the company.

As for bagged concrete, I highly doubt it's any cheaper, likely substantially more actually. Not to mention, it's inferior to ready mix, as it has much smaller stone and does not contain air-entrainment, which you undoubtedly need in your environment.........

Even with a buddy or two and a electric mixer, I really don't think you want to do 167 bags by hand.

There are a few u-haul pre-mix places around here. I don't know how big their cart is.

I mixed almost a full pallet with an antique mixer and Sherri helping. Everything was set up perfectly. I pulled a trailer right up to the job site so I didn't have to carry far.

Even though everything was as "easy" as could be for that situation, I will NEVER mix that much again by hand. I hurt so badly, I could barely sleep that night. Was sore for 2 days.

I have had as little as 1.5 yards delivered. Even with the extra charges, once you get to 1.5, around here it is cheaper to have higher quality concrete delivered than what you get at HD or Lowes.

We just did that little pad (or what I usually call the landing) one Sunday on a whim. Never again. Plan ahead.
