Building in NY state - Zone 5.
I’m preparing to frame my covered porch so I can start roofing my house in NY state. Before I do that, I need to figure out my concrete detail.
I already poured 12″ piers with 24″ bigfoots 48″ deep. The top of the piers is about 5″ lower than what the finished porch slab will be.
Planning for:
1- expansion joint between exterior wall and concrete slab
2- add rebar and extend piers to match height of finished slab
3- pour new slab with expansion joint between pier and slab
4- cut control joints at each post location
5- install simpson concealed post base on top of slab for 6×6 posts
I'm not sure what's the best shape and size to go with for the extended pier. The existing pier is formed with a 10" sonotube. It would look cleanest to form a square pier the same size or slightly bigger than the post (6x6). I assume there wouldn't be any issue with this as long as I have room to install my rebar and anchors (planning to use concealed post tie CPTZ)? But I'm also unsure what the control joints should look like; should I be worried about re-entrant corners? Am I overthinking this?
Where I'm living now there is a similar setup and there isn't any cracking (pictured).
Thanks for your comments!
