Concrete truck is coming Wednesday to pour my footers, assuming the footer inspection goes well tomorrow. Is 3000psi overkill for a single story stick framed garage? Would another mix be better? They want 131$ per sq yard here in Maryland.

Naaaaa 3000 psi is the norm around these parts...I had a Mix forman tell me the plant doesn't even do less than 3000 these days....If you order say 2000.. well your gonna get 3000..don't know if it 100% true or not but that is what he said.

The only overkill going on is that price for concrete!!

I work with precasters every day that pour 10,000psi concrete in beams and panels that only call for 5000psi max...they do it to get high early strength, which they need for a variety of reasons, but it gives additional benefits as well. I would not consider 3000psi at all overdone. You will get that much better anchorage for your embeds. Watch the driver to make sure you don't get additional field applied water beyond the mix design...and ask for a copy of the mix design sheet.

At $130.00/yd, you would get Self Consolidating Concrete here in Iowa, with a pumper truck thrown in for "free".

I'm sorry Will, But you see we have a 4hr min. on the pumper and you are odering a "short load" so there will be a surcharge....hahahah

Oh and by the way I believe we run about 100 to 125 a YD here

$75 a CY here. Plus my concrete supplier made it a 4000 lb mix. He added more cement where others add fly ash.

$80.32 in Madison, Ms. This for 3500psi. I had to have 48 yards for my garage (6" depth). Is 31x57. They said it is going up $3. in July. All the concrete companies here charge basically the same. How can that be? It is because they are rigging the prices to charge more.

The only thing I can think of is (for us) is we use alot of short loads...so that may be our surcharge.....I would tend to think that when you order a truck (full) or in multiples the price is better....it's been awhile since we needed a full load....I guess when I pour my footings/stems/slab I'll know for sure

The Feds busted a number of concrete companies in Indianapolis for price-fixing. Some of the execs are doing jail time. The investigation is on-going...

This was a slight exaggeration, but I did pay $68.00/yd last fall. 4 yd. miminum unless you want to pay $45.00 small load fee. This was even a chip mix, which I would expect to be a little higher cost than the norm. Only thing about it is that I don't trust this ready mix company with anything special in terms of plasticizers or consistent integral color. Just gray foundation and driveway mix designs. Ask for fiber and you'll get fist sized clumps.

Now, that being said, I had the pumper come for $350.00. 8 yards of concrete at $68.00/yd plus 350 for the pumper. That works out to just a little over $110.00/yd pumped. There is a new development very close to me and I let them tell me when they can come, within reason, so I'm sure I'm a fill-in between basements, but I'll take it for the price!

I guess I didn't exaggerate at all. The price I just got quoted 2 weeks ago is at $73.00. I've got 3 ready mix suppliers available to me in a very small population area compared to most, so this helps keep the costs at least reasonable.

They want $500 here for the pumper truck to show up, max 4 hours. Then $85 (or more, some were over $100) per/hour for all hours over the 4 hours. Last year the price was $82 per yrd 4k psi mix.
