So I'm a heavy equipment mechanic and I have two sets of taps and dies in their original plastic cases. These take up a lot of space in the toolbox. We only use a few certain sizes anyways. So I'm trying to make some space. Are there any other ways to store taps and dies in smaller containers? Do you and how do you store your taps and dies other than in their original containers?

Two things come to mind.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=174553 that thread and

A bunch of computers were deployed at work. I grabbed foam, mostly rectangular bars and flat pieces. It has been super easy to cut holes (grind a socket into it) for what I needed. I am sure with a razor knife and your other tools, you can work it out.

Oh, scoot them all to a difficult drawer. Pull the useful ones up to an easy access drawer when you use them. You'll have your needed ones figured out.

Dies are easy find some prescription bottles that are the same diameter and stack them in several bottles. Throw in a little oil to keep em rust free. For the taps find a rollup tool sleeve.

My most common ones are kept with the drilling/thread repair/extraction drawer. Others have their own drawer where they're somewhat stuffed in there.

As you said, you only use a few sizes. Make retrieving those sizes super easy; other less used sizes can be stored more densely.

Thank you all so far for your replies I do like the empty pill bottle idea even for taps and I like the metal box idea too.

If you put them all together in a box, it may be a good idea to put each tap in a plastic or cardboard sleeve to keep them from rattling around and getting dull.

Probably, but I usually just keep my most often used taps taped to their corresponding drill bits. 99% of the time, that I need taps, I need the same 7 or 8. I need a tray that separates them.

If I was only carrying a few key taps, they would go in the little individual sliding tubes that mill cutters often come in. I keep those little containers for any silly thing that comes up.
