I would like to add additional fluorescent lights to my barn. I would like them to hang down about 4 feet from the 12' ceiling to concentrate the light over an area I will add a workbench to. There are existing lights that are mounted directly to the ceiling and are fed via romex in the ceiling. I would rather not take the ceiling apart to add the wiring from the light fixture so I have a few ideas, but I do not know if they would meet code.
Both the old and new fluorescent light fixtures are rated as a raceway.
1) Run conduit out of one of the knockouts in the existing fixture to a new outlet box I mount to the ceiling. Than run SJ cord with a plug from the new hanging lights to the outlet. I am not sure that meets code as it looks like you can only use a light fixture as a raceway for a luminary circuit and although the outlet will be used for lights, I guess there is no way of guaranteeing that will always be the case.
2) Run conduit out of one of the knockouts in the existing fixture to a box. Run SJ cord from the box to the new hanging lights.
3) Run SJ cord from knockout of existing light fixture to new light fixture
4) Run BX from knockout of existing light fixture to new light fixture (I am pretty sure I have seen that done in malls, but I hate working with BX...
Do any / all of these options meet NEC?
Thanks in advance,
-Joe
