Connecting iPad to existing speakers?

Anybody know of the best/easiest way to hook up my ipad to some old speakers I have? I never bought a good receiver since it was just for the garage, so I just pulled apart an old stand alone stereo and spliced in the speaker wires to that. Works fine, but it would be nice to be able t stream from my ipad instead. Almost everything I've found is a docked solution directly onto new speakers. I love the sound of my existing speakers and want to keep them. Is there a wireless solution of some sort? Something I can wire directly to my speaker wires and then communicate remotely to my ipad with?

Ideas?

Old stuff may have some sentimental value but with modern electronics I went with bluetooth speakers, specifically the hot deal at sears last month. Simple, inexpensive, mobile blue tooth speakers are out there.

You want an Airplay receiver. It connects to the wifi network where your iPad can handshake with it and transmit audio seamlessly. You turn it on with the menu that comes up when you slide your finger up from the bottom of the screen. If you don't have wifi, you can get a bluetooth receiver and it works pretty much the same but you don't get the fidelity that Airplay can provide or the range. In my experience, bluetooth works on iPhone and iPad for about 25 feet. With an Airplay receiver plugged into my garage stereo, I can control it from nearly anywhere, including the whole garage and yard, even by my pool.

There are literally hundreds of different ones. The first one on the link outputs 3.5mm audio to whatever audio device you use. There are standalone Airplay enabled stereos with speakers ready to go out of the box. There are really fancy whole house kits like the Sonos stuff. I use a cheap $20 Airplay adapter that plugs in to the old 30 pin iPhone port on my Sony stereo. All Airplay stuff works with the iPad.

Looks like $50 into a wifi receiver and mini amp will get me exactly what I need!

I had some old car audio lying around. I used an old PC power source to power everything. Most head units have an AUX in. The will also have an amp do power some speakers. I have an FM transmitter that connects to my phone, or I just use the radio. The computer amp is to drive the subwoofer ;)

Buy this on Amazon for $35 shipped:

Plug it into ANY stereo receiver (amp) headphone jack connected to your speakers and you are golden. It even comes wit rca jacks to use in an "Aux" input, if you don't have a headphone jack in your amp.

This is a great little gizmo. I have a Sansui amp from 1970 with two Rectilinear III floor speakers from same era. This device about half the size of your thumb makes wireless streaming from your phone, iPad or PC easy peasy!

How about a $15.00 6' long 3.5mm (headphone jack) to RCA Male stereo cable. Plug into the Tape In port. Works perfect in my garage...

Go to your local recycling centre and get one of the old 70's,80's stereos with the weighted radio frequency knob and inputs to run a record player. Then just get a 3.5mm headphone to RCA cable and use the record player input to run the ipad.

That way you have FM/AM radio as well and can plug in any audio device with a headphone jack.

+1 to the 3.5mm to RCA cable. You should be able to find one for 5 bucks or so. Works perfectly if your unit has inputs for extra sources.

However, don't plug it to the record player ("Phono") input, because that has the built-in RIAA circuit, and it won't work with the iPad's headphone output signal. Probably won't break anything but I wouldn't even try. Instead, use the AUX, Tape, SAT, VCR or any other RCA input, just not the Phono one.

Hope this helps :)

I use an old Yamaha pro logic receiver I had, and a headphone to RCA adapter. You can get an old stereo receiver on CL for about $25 if you look around, and the cable is about $5.
