I too have one in the metal pin style, which was purchased when I was working on a bathroom remodel. Didn't end up needing it for what I thought I would, so it's still in the package, but for the price it wasn't worth taking back.

Fact is, now that I have it, and I know exactly where it is, I can and will pull it out when the opportunity arises.

I have and use the metal pin type. I don't use it a lot, but when needed it is a huge time saver.

I have used the metal pin type before and you get a pretty good trace to work off of. you can cut it into paper or cardboard to create a template

I came across this ad while watch youtube: https://www.inspiredhousehold.com/products/saker-contour-duplication-gauge-1?variant=31204724015244

A contour duplication tool. Anyone tried it?
I’m tempted of giving a shot.

Those are a standard tool that has been around for decades. The older styles use metal pins or plates.
The newer styles tend to use platic plates.
I believe there are, or were, ones yhat could be locked in a row for duplicating the contours or wide or very wide moldings.
The main disadvantage, is the the plates don’t copy the molding exactly.
If you have more time, rubbing plastic wrap or tape into the molding, then using bondo to make an exact reverse copy, is a better technique, you just have to trim the edge of the bodo straight snd square after making the mold.

I’ve got one of the old metal pin type. I think the pins are probably better as they have rounded tips. Seems to be quite accurate.

I don’t use it often, maybe every few years, but when I need it, it works well. Certainly quick and easy to use.

I have the one from Harbor Freight

It is 6 in and is only $7.99 before any coupons. I have used it a few times and it has worked well for me. Great for putting down flooring near a doorway.

I have a metal pin one also. It's one of those tools you forget about at a time when you could be using it. I have used it laying tile which they are indispensable for.

Bought one of the metal pin style years ago. used it for body work projects. helped with getting curves on the edges of fenders to match.
A - I am NOT a bodyman
B- I really hate doing bodywork
C- I **** at bodywork and need all the help I can get.
