I don't have a big issue with rust but outside of plain oil is there a better rust preventative for use on steel tool tables that aren't used frequently?. I seem to remember my dad used to use some kind of sap remover that left a coating on the surface. What do you all use?

Well i recently started using air tool oil for coating plain steel and tools, because it has all sorts of additives too it. I never really had a problem to begin with though, kinda like a preventative measure.

Spray on some LPS3. It goes on as a liquid but eventually will turn into a soft waxy substance. If you want to remove it completely, mineral spirits will do it. It was designed specifically to prevent rust.

google for sprays that are meant to protect steel "molds" These molds are worth thousands of dollars and cannot have any rust.

I'd 2nd the vote for LPS products.

"Slide NO-RUST" is good stuff, like an oil.

http://www.zero-rust.com/ <----- or the serious stuff!!!

Thanks for all the info. FWIW, I found the product that my dad used to use. It was Craftsman Sap and Pitch Remover. It not only removes sap and pitch deposits but it leave a coating on the surface that inhibits rust according to the label. Not sure if it is still available.

Think I'll be looking for some LPS3.
