Conversion kit for Torquemaster system to Liftmaster 3800

Thought I would throw this up here and get some comments (positive or negative is fine)

I generated a kit a while back that allowed me to mount my Liftmaster 3800's onto my Wayne Dalton Torque master system.

I liked the fact that the torsion spring was inside the tube and was easily loaded/unloaded. However, the iDrive is not recommended (in my area at least) for Western Canada as much of it is plastic and has a tendancy to fail prematurely.

I had purchased my Liftmasters not knowing that they simply were not "compatible". Hence my coversion kit.

Here is a link to it on You-tube.

Re: Conversion kit for Torquemaster sysem

I thought the link was working. I will double check. Do a You-Tube search (Liftmaster 3800 on Wayne Dalton Torque tube)

Its working ;)

neat setup - just machined the sprocket on the torque tube side - are you running set screws or? Gearing looks wrong to me though, (no offence) however door doesn't appear to be running at warp speed, so... ;)

I originally had 2 of the small sprockets on the system but found that since it doesn't have the Ø3" - 4" cable drums, the door would crawl up (30+ seconds one way on my 9'W x 8' H). The larger sprocket reduced it to a more realistic value.

What did you do in the center of the torque tube where the old opener drove the tube? Did you machine the gears or just purchase them. I like the concept!

I machined the profile into the hubs. Didn't do anything in the middle of the tube. The hub can slide the length of the bar and can be mounted on either side.

Looks expensive, probably more than replacing it with traditional torsion spring setup

The largest cost is machining the tear-shaped profile into the hub. It is definitely cheaper than throwing out a good torque master tube and replacing it with a bulky torsion assembly.

New member here. I am interested in purchasing either a complete kit or just the idrive sprocket. Don't need it just yet but want to be prepared when the WD expires.

I know this thread is almost a year old but....

Nice job. Pretty innovative.

My guess is that if you have a Torquemaster installed that you would have to unwind the spring to install this. Wouldn't it just be more efficient to install a standard spring?

Only saying this because the 3 guys I know that do garage doors for a living say that the torquemaster setups are garbage.

To each their own, I guess.

That still is a very cool way to do it expecially if you have the spring already and have the equipment to make the sprocket.

I'm glad you got it to work. I'm glad you passed on the Idrive. I'm not a big fan of the Tourquemaster spring set up. I've had to replace 2 systems that the springs broke on the inside of the tube.
