I have the shelves shown below. I'm in the process of buying a new house this month. I have a lot of these shelves. I am trying to figure out a way to convert the shelves to some type of wall mount. The walls are regular wood studs finished with sheetrock.

Anybody done this before?

take a length of 2x4 and put it on the wall using 1/4 inch lag screws into studs or 1/4 tap cons into cinder block. then put shelve on top of that ledge and then use 2-3 screws per upper levels to attach back to the wall.

2x4s are hidden by shop lights in my setup and I put a LOT of heavy **** on mine and then I climb all over them when looking for ****. check out vicegrip's garage I stole the idea from him

Hey!

Can you PM me a phone number and a time when I could ask a few questions. I found the hardware that does this from the manufacturer, but it is high $$$. I'd like to ask a few questions.

Thanx!

Sorry email address was still active but unused. PM works.

I drilled pilot holes and ran 3 1/2 inch long lag screws through the side webbing through the drywall and into the stud behind. One lag screw per stud per shelf. Large thick washer on the lag screw to prevent the head from pulling through the shelving. Ran the lags in with a socket taped tight on a long extension and my impact gun. This format is strong and stronger than I hoped. I climb on it and one set has many sticks of roll-bar tubing stored on top. been up for years, no sagging, no pullout of any of the lags.

Old picture, i need to update the shop pix.

I see both you guys had great success with this, and I sure don't want to spend the exorbitant amount they want for the hardware from the manufacturer. But I just keep coming back to the concept that there is not cantileaver support on that bottom shelf. I can understand that the poled tie the box together.

If the outer edges of the pole mounts are 48 inches, how did you "catch all the studs". It seemslike the pole circles are interfering with hitting the studs on the ends.

Here's a shot of mine. I got the idea from Vicegrip. Before loading them up they were all tested by me hanging off the front. They don't budge.

I used 3 screws per shelf = 9 per unit.

One lag every 16 inches per shelf. Where in the shelf depends on where the studs are in relation to where you place the shelf. The shelving is very stiff per shelf and as a whole. Even when you cannot get a lag in right at a corner the shelving unit is still strong on the wall. I bolted inside corners or **** joints together where one shelf came together with the next shelf as well. I also ran a self taping screw into each corner of each top shelf to keep the leg tube in the shelf. I weight 210+ and climb on the stuff to dig around in the top bins all the time. It does not even flex enough to notice.

I was wondering about the leg tube, and whether it would try to fall out. It looks like if you started on a stud, you still can't hit it because the post is there. So you would want to offset to pick up 3 studs? Does that sound right?

Unless you drove the lag in from an angle, and that seems like you would have two iffy lags, one on each corner.

Hey,
How much do the Posts contribute to the way you guys have these mounted?

I have an area up high, I'd like to run a single Row of shelves. There would be no post. Do you think that would work?

@ViceGrip, did you use the 2x4 as a ledge under the bottom shelf like the other poster?

i think the other guys answered better than I could. If you still want to talk on the phone PM me and I'll send it to you. I did the top 2 rows with 3 screws each and I didn't drill into the polls front he shelves. Vicegrip that was a good idea. i have 4 foot wide shelves and I'm pretty sute the other guys do as well. I don't think he used a ledger. I did to help me mount these up by myself. I don't really think its needed if you use the 9 lag screws per unit. I don't think you can use this method on a single shelf. everything being boxed in is what give it strength and self cantilever if you will.
