convert utility sink into parts washer???

I have an old Mustee laundry/utility sink with a poly tub in a metal free standing cabinet with a cover panel. My wife hated it and we never used it so I removed it from our laundry room and have it stored in the barn loft.

I'm thinking of putting a 5 gall bucket in the cab with and using and old washing machine pump to cycle water up to the spout to make a parts washer.

I'd most likely stick with a non-flammable liquid (concentrated solution of Simple Green?).

Anybody else done or seen such a critter?

Thoughts? Advice?

Way cool. Just make sure the poly tub can take the chemicals and the beating. Some of the Fiat laundry tubs (and shower pans) we used to install back in the day, were fragile as eggshells.

I've often thought of making such an animal out of left-overs, but could never get past the space that it would end up needing when not in use. I also worried about McGiver'd bits and pieces leaking the spirits that I would have used for solvents.

Given that you would be using much safer fluids, it should be very do-able. I would test your washing machine pump and make sure it does not put out too much flow and pressure...you don't need much for a wash down unit.

Double check that all the seals, hoses, plastic parts. and pump parts won't react poorly to the fluids you will be using.

Using a flamable or corrosive liquid is very risky and I would not even consider it.

I'm wondering about the washdown fluid getting "moldy"

I did that years ago, and it got left behind in the last move. I really miss it.

I used a submersible solvent pump and a non-flammable cleaning solvent from Grainger. I punched holes in the lid of a 5 gal bucket with the drain pipe running in, and set the pump a little above the bottom to keep it out of the sludge . Ran a hose up through the faucet holes. I also had a piece of metal I placed over the top just to keep the junk out.

It worked great for many years. I didn't have any issue with moldy solvent.
