I would just sell the gun and buy the correct one at that point.
Kindof what I'm thinking unfortunately. I was planning on buying the 899 for doing the heavy lifting anyway, but I figured that similar swaps had worked in the past so I'd give it a shot and get a little added torque in a 3/8" for only $24.

FYI, if anyone wants to convert to a 1/2" drive, the same as the DW057, here's the parts:

Anvil, 1/2", part no. 608024-00 at e-replacementparts.com
you'll also need a new nose cone (housing)
Housing, 1/2", part no 607993-01, and a new washer, 605854-01

This housing has a larger bearing in it to accept the 1/2" anvil.
As info, the housing for the 3/8 drive is 607993-00. Note how just the last number is different.

I hate to revive a two year old thread, but I am wondering about going the other way converting the DCF880 (1/2" detent) using the anvil rebuild kit for a DCF 883 (3/8 hog-ring)? The reason being:
- I'm not always terribly satisfied with the breakaway torque on the 880 and plan to upgrade to the 899 in the fall.
- Seeing as I still have the 880, and a selection of deep well 3/8 impact sockets and 3/8 impact swivels, I figured it might be worth it to swap out the anvil if at all possible.

I presume the guts are interchangable?

Did you have to replace any other components to make the switch? Again I am considering swapping the 1/2" for the 3/8" in my DCF880, just looking to see what components may be necessary to make the switch over...

Update: purchased the 3/8" anvil and it arrived this weekend. Pulled the gun apart to find that the anvils for the 3/8" and 1/2" impact guns ARE NOT THE SAME... The difference lies in the part of the anvil that runs inside the needle bearing at the end of the wrench:

As you can see, it's part of the existing nose cone assembly, and therefore cannot be removed and replaced without replacing the entire cone.

The anvils, as seen in the second photo, are significantly different in diameter, 1.224" as opposed to the original at 1.350" I'm considering my options at this point as I have opened the anvil and it's mine now.

What do the fine folks of GJ think about the possibility of machining a bushing that would press fit onto the new anvil in order to get it up to the spec of the existing?64429b319887674e0c71dc05eb535ad8.jpg70adf7f1513038cc892fd2747e9e167c.jpg

I think you need the nose cone like kruegdr said which would be better than fitting a spacer/bushing. A bushing is too soft, you need some hard steel like the anvil is made of but you may as well just get the proper nose cone.

Ya at this point I'm just going to put it back together again (if I can get that stupid plastic piece back in, lol) and use it with an adapter I guess. Not ideal given my accumulation of 3/8" impact stuff I was hoping to use it on, but it was worth a shot.
