I have an old Craftsman Dual Range arc welder. I would like to install a transformer to pull 110v from the 220v leads. This would result in a 220v 50 amp to a 110v,30 amp, 3kva recepticle to plug in a light, drill motor or an angle grinder. I would like this to be installed in the arc welder case. In trying to obtain such a device I am having extreme difficulty not only finding a transformer but even explaining its use.Major electrical distributors, supply hoses, electricians etc have no idea what I am talking about. Anybody done this before or have any ideas. I am Not looking for thrtypical travel transformers.

You could start with the Hammond Power Solutions on-line catalog.
Look at the first section of the catalog that has the title "Industrial Control and General Purpose Enclosed Transformers".
(Hammond sells through electrical distributors; you don't buy direct from the factory.)

Transformers are more or less 'priced by the pound' - more VA means more copper in the windings and more steel in the core, so more dollars. Not sure why you want a 3kVA capacity if you're only plugging in a light, drill, or angle grinder. A 3kVA transformer is big/heavy/expensive. (Hammond makes a big range of sizes and types.) A new 3kVA transformer from an industrial supplier would probably cost more than your vintage welder is worth.
