So I live and work by Milwaukee, WI. On my way home from work I have a thrift store in route. Being a young guy with a new house, love for vintage items, and not a whole ton of money I stop just about every day to see if anything good is there. Tonight I scored two micrometers. One is a 3-4 inch vintage starrett no 436. The other is a J.T. Slocomb Co. 6-7 inch micrometer.
Anyways while looking at the starrett i noticed it had a new paint job put on it at some time. But there was some engraving that was under the paint. While turning it the light to catch the shadow after 4 minutes of looking i deciphered what it said.
HDM Co. Dept. 5707
Given the area and the fact that it was a big enough company to have a numerical department that large. I assume it is Harley Davidson Motor Company Department 5707. I have a friend at work who's father worked for Harley forever and I hope he can let me know what department that is.
Sorry I couldn't get the writing to show up in pics. Not sure if there is any way to strip the top layer of paint.
Anyways, is there any way how to tell how old the mic is? It states "THE L.S. STARRETT CO. ATHOL, MASS U.S.A."
