In the olden days, it was common for folks on rural property to dig a pit to bury their garbage in. We're 2nd owners of our property and a couple lived here for about 60 years. We had an excavator digging a lot of clay out for a new house foundation and while standing nearby watching the bucket pull up a scoop, I spotted something unusual. I signaled the operator to stop and went into the hole and found a teacup about 3' below the surface. Not any old teacup. On the bottom it says "Made in Japan Occupied" so it is from just after WWII when US forces were occupying Japan. The teacup survived with only a couple of chips. It had to 1st survive being thrown into the pit, then survive more garbage and fill being tossed on it, then not get crushed by the excavator. Hard to believe it survived all that.
During the eventual demolishing of the old house I kept hoping to find some buried coins or anything of interest. All I found was a few pages of the local newspaper from the 50s in the walls.
