Decided to take a break from messing with the new mill and ran to get some lunch. On the way back saw a garage sale that didn't have the usual endless piles of children's clothes so I stopped to have a look.

Spotted an interesting looking wood box. The kid started giving me some line about how super rare it was and "they" only made couple. About then mom walks over and I explain what it is and that they are still being produced. Neither of them had any clue what it was. Guessing it must have come from a grandfather or something. So I offered her $50 (all the cash I had on me) she seems shocked and couldn't grab my money fast enough.

A Holdridge Radii-Cutter has been on my "hopefully someday wish list" for a long time now. Really excited to finally have one!

Looks cool indeed. I need enlightenment, if you would explain to what it does I'd be even happier for you.
Thanks,

Richard

Oh sorry! It's for cutting radiuses on a lathe.

Here's a picture of one that Graham08 posted in the Who's got lathes thread.

That's a $600 item new for those wondering. Super Nice Snag!! That's the kind of price that you'd pay just to figure out how to use it on something later!

Yep....for $50, that is DEFINITELY a YOU ****!!!!

For the ones that do not know, and just to add to what you said, it will turn both Concave, and Convex radii on the lathe. You can make a bowl, or you can make a ball. And as long as someone knows how to set one up, they are very accurate, or I should say, they are as accurate as the lathe's accuracy. Nice find for sure

Flipping disgusting, for $50?!! Love those non-chelant wooden boxes.

Of course the kid was laying the eBay "only 3 made, one of a kind, ****. He should have said they fit on a rat rod as well (see my rant on "rat rod" elsewhere)...

Yeah, add a "Electrolux point" to your personal scorecard. Congratulations, and yes, you really do ****! :)

Could have offered him $25 and he would have snapped it up. If you are like me, that will nag at the back of your mind for a while. You got a great price, but he would have taken less. Paid more than you had to. Please don't take this as insulting, intended as light-hearted humor. Am I the only one who has this problem? :)

Well it works pretty darn slick! Made a replacement knob for the table lock on my Bridgeport. :)

Good find - I chased a few of those on ebay up to $400 or so and then I back off.

I rarely see them used go for less half to 3/4 of full price.

OMG you ****!! I would have started at $10 but would have been willing to pay up to twice what you did, I'm sure...

The freshly turned handle makes it hurt that much more...good job

Congrats, that was quite the deal. I finally gave up looking and built one a while back. What machine are you running it on?

Out of curiosity what was the approximate age and demographic of said kid?

The lathe I used is my TOS SN40. 16" swing 72" between centers.

Just your typical suburban know it all 13 year old.

Hope you made off like you stole it! :) That is one hell of a score.

A local reseller has started importing them here and the smaller unit cost about the same as I paid for my 12x36 lathe.

Good job on the handle too.
