For reference, here is a pic of a multiple head DP set up like 454 mentioned from an auction I attended last week in Richmond CA. This rig sold for just $75. (not to me)

Those cast iron tables make great welding fab tables.

As has been noted, its one 'upper' from a gang-drill.

That said, the Edlund is a high quality unit, and well putting worth some work into.

I've seen several of that class of upper units turned into excellent bench drill presses by having a steel cutting firm cut out a base plate of 2" or thicker steel, which would be drilled/tapped with the pattern to mount the upper, and a pattern of tapped holes for holding-down furniture for work-pieces. Most steel-cutting firms will offer Blanchard grinding at a very reasonable price, which will make a nice job of the new base-plate.

I have an Edlund drill press of that style, myself, and, back when it was on active use in small-parts sub-contract work, I felt that the flat-belt system was safer for unskilled 'handle-pullers', as it would slip if a drill was jammed.......actually, same idea today, if I let a friend use the machine..... : )
