I had to head to my parent's house this weekend for a funeral and took a stroll around my Dad's little shop. I'd been in there 1000 times since he set it up but hadn't been on this web site. My eyes have been opened! He's got a little wood working shop with mostly inexpensive but workable power tools. He lives in Springfield, MO with a Grizzly showroom 1/2 mile away so you can guess what most of it is but that isn't what was cool.
I started digging through some of the drawers and he told me that most of that stuff had been my Grand dad's. He had been a contractor, carpenter, plumber, painter, butcher and so on. I found 8 old Stanly planes from a little rabbit plane up to a big honker and all were work worn but in excellent condition. There were 2 Stanly ratcheting braces, one almost brand new and I came home with the older one. I found several pairs of Diamond pliers that were in great shape and he gave me a 15" Diamond adjustable wrench to bring back with me. I also got a Rigid pipe wrench (probably at least 40 years old and looks new). I already have 2 others that he had given me when my Grand dad first passed away. He had a little tiny 4 or 6" Rigid pipe wrench as well but he wasn't letting that go yet!
The coolest thing was when I started looking closer at the vises on his bench. One was a little red Buffalo and I didn't look at it too close. The other was a 5 or 6" Littletown. It looks like it's been repainted but it is still blue. It was in great shape but I didn't ask about bringing it home.
I'm looking forward to going through his mechanics tools one day. He doesn't have a lot of tools because he doesn't do much work on his cars but I know he's got Craftsman that I thought were really old when I was a little kid and I'm 47 now.
All of this will be mine someday but, as much as I like these tools, I hope I don't get them for a long, long time.
