Coolant Pressure Tester - Snap-on SVTS272

With the nicer weather approaching I plan on doing some work on the cooling system of some of my vehicles. I was thinking that a pressure tester would be a nice addition to have in the toolbox just to check the system and make sure everything was put back together correctly.

Speaking with my Snap-on guy he has the SVTS272 on sale right now. I was looking for some reviews on this tester but there is very little information out there. I was wondering what everything thinks of this tool. In the description it says the kit comes with everything to test 90% of the vehicles in the field. I was wondering how true this is as I do not want to have to spend additional money on adapters. I am manly going to use the tool on GM and Ford vehicles.

The SVTS272 is the same as offered by MAC and Matco with different product numbers. I use mine primarily on Jeeps and no adapters are needed. They work good at helping to identify coolant leaks. When the vehicle is cool, no pressure in radiator, just give it a few pumps and see where the leak is. Matco or MAC or other sources will have a better deal on adapters if you need them. Look up the application guide and see what it will cost you. For coolant system refilling, the Snap On SVTSRAD272A is a nifty tool as well. MAC and Matco also rebrand these. Use the right adapter and hook up to shop air. It pulls vacuum on the system which also checks for leaks and then the vacuum is used to **** coolant from a jug or container back into the system and eliminates air pockets. This can be particularly helpful in larger vehicles with rear heater cores, but works good on just about anything.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why would you spend Snap-on money on that item when Standt has been the industry standard on cooling system pressure checkers since the dawn of time?

Get a stant. It's less that $70 and buy adapters as needed

I'm pretty sure the Snap On is no longer made by Stant! The SVTS262C was a Stant, but Stant has outsourced more of their pressure tester and started using cheap plastic adapters. The failure rate on the newer stant design is rather poor...

I believe the new Snap On (SVTS272) is not made by Stant

Nicer in what way? The picture shows that half of the adapters are made of plastic. Anyway, it looks like it is still compatible with the Stant adapters (or Snap On / Blue Point adapters), so that's a plus.

My Blue Point coolant pressure tester is made by Stant, and all of the adapters are all metal. Yes, the adapters are way pricey, but they're much nicer than the import ****.

Well, Snap On offers easy financing, which is a pretty awful deal, but is important to some. They also offer convenient warranty service. Finally, the resale value of a used Snap On tool is going to be higher than a Stant.

Still, if I were paying new prices today, I'd give the Stant a serious consideration.
