curious to see others choices. list a link if possible.

my 2 most favorite sounding starters are the IR air starters and the Ford 292 312 y block starters. very distinct sounds.

my favorite engines are the cobra and the garrett air research turbine jet start engines.

The old Mopar gear reduction starters. You could tell it was a Chrysler product cranking without even seeing the vehicle.

No doubt about the air starters. That was my first thought. The effect is enhanced when its starting an early Mack V8 or a Detroit Diesel.

a Big +1 here. That big gear reduction starter on a 440 or even a hemi race car sounded awesome as heck.

Sounds like the jet dryer at the drag strip here.

These kinds of starts are a personal favorite:

I always liked the sound of a SBC starter. When I replaced mime with a Pep Boys special, I lost the sound. In fact, it sounded foreign. Last replacement was a bench built unit and the original sound returned, more or less.

A cross over pipe with reasonably quiet mufflers makes for a cool rumble and nice song at 4000 RM.

I have a SBC in a very old Jeep and the starter sounds like a Buick. However, with the 30/30 cam and shorty header exhaust, I forget about the starter real fast.

Another vote for the Mopar gear reduction starters...I grew up with those and they just sound right to me. I remember taking my then Superbird to an all Mopar show with a Ford friend. When it was time to leave he was freaking out!

Not sure about starters but for me engines have to be either the sound of an F1 grid as they start (you have to be there, not the televised/muted sound). Or the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

I have also stood close to the end of the runway at RAF Lakenheath and felt the engine of F15's as they stand on their tails and go up at full power. That was awesome too but it is more of a feeling than a sound (although it is ****** loud).

Another vote for the old Chrysler starters. Anyone remember on all the old TV shows no matter what kind of car was starting they dubbed in the Chrysler starter? Always bugged me seeing a Ford or Chevy starter sound like a Chrysler. Which also brings to mind all the old shows with the squeeling tires on DIRT.

Remember being at the drive inn move and hearing the cars start. You could tell what each car was by the sound of the starter, they all sound like imports
now.

I may be getting old, but I aint dead.

The old Mopar gear reduction starters. You could tell it was a Chrysler product cranking without even seeing the vehicle.

You could also tell by the fact that it had to crank for 5 minutes before the engine started. Most of the old Mopars had awful carbs that made for poor starting engines.

Any of the old supercharged Auburns, Cords, or Duesenbergs....Blower Bentleys, the scream of an old supercharged 540K Mercedes

I still remember the sound of the starter motor on my first car, a flat head ford V8, then the sound of that engine through glass packs. I still have a couple of those engines. Might have to build a stand just to hear it again. Another sound that's burned into my brain is the sound of an old '60s era Honda 305 with the baffles removed. Then of course the Triumph Bonneville from the same era. The Honda even sounded good at idle. The Triumph sounded great at redline.

BBC, especially the 427s. Properly cammed they sound like " feeding time at the zoo ". Gear drive starters on aluminum air craft engines have a ring all their own. The longer they crank, the more enjoyable.

I dig air starters too but am happy with any engine that starts. That thing that starts military jets "the huffer" or whatever its called is cool as well

+1 on the Y block starters and their distinct engine sound - it's that peculiar firing order. Follow this link to see one of mine with a VS57C Paxton McCulloch on it...

Any 2-stroke Detroit Diesel. Check YouTube for 6-53, 6-71 or 8-71, or 8-92 among others. Nothing sounds like that Detroit loping idle, except maybe a cammed out drag car. They also have the "Detroit Scream" when you get them revved up under load.

My last truck had a C-15 Cat that had a sweet powerful sound when it started. Kind aof a metallic snarlingl. The Detroit loping idle is pretty sweet also, but it means the idle buffer screw adustment is off a little.

2009-2011 Mercedes AMG C63 cold start.

6.2 liters of normally aspirated bliss, pumping out ~500hp:

I leave my car door open in the morning when I start mine just to hear this noise.
