Hey all. What size window units would you recommend to cool my 30x40 building with 14 foot ceilings. It's insulated and has windows on each end of it. My thoughts was to put units in each window for now. Later I'm going to be upgrading my home AC/furnace when we add the addition and move the old unit to the building. But for now it's hot!

Building looks great! You build it or have it built? I used to live in Raytown mo so I know your weather pretty good. Window units are going to lack getting the humidity in that shop down. I would recommend a mini split, may be cheaper then two window units and can heat too. Also I bet it'll be cheaper then moving your old hvac due to ductwork.

If you want window units get online and use the free manual j hvac calculator. I'm betting that insulation is r6 or r13 those windows are single pane those garage doors are uninsulated do you'll need two really big window units.

Thanks for the reply. The building is by Worldwide Steel Buildings out of Peculiar, Mo. The doors are insulated and I'm not sure of the R rating of the insulation but it seems pretty thick. I didn't even know what a mini-split was until researching yesterday.

For now I've been running this 8000 BTU unit in a doorway and after a couple hours of running it gets it semi comfortable to work in lightly. Anything strenuous and I'm sweating.

I'm working on my stair stringers for my mezzanine and cooking a bit.

Have you thought about a HVAC rooftop unit and just mount it outside ground level? Our 30x45 has a 93,000 BTU (heat) unit not sure on the cooling tonnage, in the winter it kept the shop at 68-70 and in the summer it's keeping it at 72~.

We have a single vent in the warehouse and then a duct to the office. I see them pop up on craigslist for less than $300. I am planning on picking up another as we are going to be adding onto the shop this fall.
It works great for keeping the humidity down as we work with metal, when we don't run it things like to flash rust.

Its also nice to have the air filtered, keeps down on the dust. Though we are going through a filter change per day...

Another thing to think about since you have such high ceilings is to put a few ceiling fans up, our old shop had that and just having the moving air helped a bunch.

First, there is nothing you can do "temporarily" (i.e. low cost) that is going to cool that building unless someone is going to give you something for free !

Second, those appear to be slider windows. Window A/C unit for sliders are more expensive than double hung windows. If you have some existing window A/C units, remove the glass and make temporary plywood filler panels. Add extra support brackets under the A/C units.

For now I'm picking up a Frigidaire 15000 BTU window unit to get by with what I need to do in the shop. My intentions were to do as said with replacing the actual window with a board and mount the AC in it.

I have a AC guy coming out maybe tonight to look at the building for his recommendations for heat and Cooling it
