Can a home owner install a Mini Split?

I installed mine myself. Did the wiring and because my walls are not covered yet I hid the lines and wiring inside the walls as well as the drain hose.
On the inside , nothing to be seen but inside unit and on the outside, just the
unit. No wires or hose running up my outside wall. Looks nice and neat.
I had a friend who does air on the side pull the vaccuum for me and test for leaks for a hundred bucks.
I bought this Alen 12,000 btu for my 600 sq ft attached garage with all accessories delivered with a line kit and installed for $600 total.

Nothing to lift out of the window at the end of the season, nothing to store on my work bench or in my basement, and way too quiet even on high so I can still hear the tunes or tv while working.

Mini split is the way to go IMHO.

I've got a morton pole building 30x60 real well insulated and todays heat index is over a 100 and the shop stayed at 80 with no a/c and all windows and overhead doors shut. Money on insulation well spent.

prlly a dumb question but why would opening your garage door make the inside house temperature rise 3 degrees or so? Theoretically if you have perfectly insulated walls and no leaks you shouldn't have any degree change or would you? My walls are insulated but I think the heat would still heat up the walls more than normal. Or there are leaks somewhere which allow the heat in.

Nexusroot,

If you are still monitoring this thread.

I just got back from vac.. Shop closed up for almost two weeks and inside temp. is 90 F, last week outside temps were well over 100 F, 108 F today and forcast 110 tomorrow. I started the portable unit in my wifes shop Sunday afternoon, this morning the temp was 74 F and maintained (AC set for 74 F). So the two inside walls and the ceiling were 90 F and two outside walls were well over 100 F topping out at 108 F today and the unit was able to lower the temperature to 74 F.

Sorry, but I just turned it on and left, so I do not know how fast it cooled my wifes shop.

The unit is having trouble keeping humidity low, 67% is a little high for air conditioned space.

I think it's time for the main unit and 80 F again!!

How nice are your neighbors and how much do you work in your garage?
I mounted a window unit in a 2x4 frame mounted on heavy-duty drawer slides inside a garage window - when it is hot out and I'm going to be working in the garage I just open the window an push/slide the A/C out - when I done, I pull it back in and close the window and the window blind. A/C what A/C?

:D That's funny! It sounds like a great setup for keeping the costs down in neighborhoods that don't like window AC's!

If I had the room and the cash, I'd get myself a Big *** Fan. I sometimes envy those working in milder climates during the summer months but then I think about the winter and I'm happy to live in Florida!
