Good morning folks - my wife bought me an Ironton 65 foot retractable cord reel for Christmas. She got it off a guy on Craigslist. Yesterday i was going to hang it and discovered that the cord won't lock when pulled out. We are trying to contact the seller but I don't have high expectations.

Anybody ever took one of these apart? I hesitate to pop it open because of what i imagine is a big A%^&& spring inside it :). I believe Ironton is a northern tool house brand - would they do service on these reels?

Thanks for your thoughts/ideas

Rick

It looks like they're building those wiki's as part of an engineering class project. It's hosted on Carnegie Mellon University website.

I was having a PIA of a time to get my kids light to lock. Mine will lock right up but his kept retracting. I found you had to go slow at the distance you wanted and hesitate, then it would lock. You probably tried all the techniques but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I'll give it a few more tries before I take it apart

Normally if you let the reel unwind to a relaxed position, you can take it apart easily as the spring will be unwound all the way. When you assemble it, just wind the cord and reel together as one to the desired tension, then put the stop back on it.

The instructions say a technician can tighten the spring if it doesn't fully retract so you must be able to open it and do stuff, it's always worth a shot.

 Check the reel for correct operation by slowly pulling out the cord. A “clicking” noise will be heard
every half revolution of the drum.
 To latch the reel, pull out the cord then allow it to retract after hearing the first, second, or third
“click”.

Take the screws around the edge loose first, and see if the non coed aside will lift off. I've found the spring mechanism is usually attached by the screws towards the center on the side with the power cord and contacts.

I had the same issue with the Ironton cord reel. Mine didn’t “click” when I pulled the cord out so I figured something was stuck. I found other posts that put me on to this. It took time t remedy but it works fine now. Here is what I did:

Take out all the screws. The heads of the screw were on the electrical input side. Only take out those that hold the two haves together. On the other side, pop out the small core in the center. Take out the small screw.

Spit the shell apart. On the half where the small enter cover was look inside. There will be a white plastic piece that is spring loaded. This piece is often installed, I read, too tightly so it won’t move freely. Loosen the screw and lube the white piece where it rubs on the cover. Note: I didn’t do this bit it might help: Remove the white piece and put a small washer under it and put the screw back but not too tightly. It should keep it from rubbing in the future. You will see what I mean.

Time to put it back together. I struggled mightily to get the center shaft to align with the cover. It has a + end to it. I finally used a nail by putting it it through the hole where the small screw was and slid it into the shaft. I quickly was able to snap things back together. It worked fine after this.

Another note: Make sure the ball on the cord that stops the cord from retracting all the way is slid down to the plug. That way, when you pull the cord out you will immediately begin tensioning the spring. Otherwise, the cord may not retract all the way. I didn’t add any other tension and mine retracts fine. I’m not sure how additional tension could be added, There is a warning note inside that says to avoid over tightening. Perhaps somebody knows how to add additional tension?

We recently purchased a Reelcraft cord reel which is I'm guessing is probably similar to the one you have and for our application we needed to remove the reel locking feature.

I did have the exploded assembly drawing from the mfg so I could see what parts had to be removed. Basically there is a pawl held on by one bolt and it also had a spring attached to it, my guess is that the spring is broken on yours.
It was not to difficult to remove but you will need to unload the reel spring before taking it apart.

I suggest you contact the mfg to try to get a drawing which shows the assembly and take it from there.
