cordless batteries

My craftsman cordless drill is like my right arm out in the shop.Today my last battery died and I went to sears to look for a new battery. The bastards wanted 69.00 and change! A whole new drill with charger and 2 new batts is 89.00. I went to fleabay and looked there and found several used ones and several adds for a book that shows you how to fix them.Has anyone on here ever successfully fixed one? If so how is it done? I really don't want to buy used ones and if I am going to spend the cash for a new one I might as well spend another twenty and get a whole new drill! If this has already been covered I'm sorry for the repost.

Cool link. I've got a few dead DeWalt 18v batteries lying around so i'll try this out to see if i can get 1 or 2 good ones out of the junk ones. Will post how it goes.

I haven't tried the repair myself yet. I read somewhere that you can buy cheap rechargable batteries at Harbor Freight and use the cells from them.

I used to work for Black&Decker
when a battery pack goes bad it is generally just one cell that is bad. if we got a defective pack in and we wanted to rebuild it for our own personal use we used to take them apart and found the bad cell and replaced it with a good one from another pack that was used as a donar.
looking at what the guy was outlining doing is exactly correct.

we used to just solder the little tab to the replacement cell, you have to be sure it is clean and get a good solder job on it
