cordless impact for commercial use

My 4yr old hilti sid144's finally puked...daily almost constant use, i'll run in close to a thousand lags or self drillers a day...

Contemplating replacements, I hear the new hilti 18v don't stand up as well, Dewalt Makita and Milwaukee just aren't heavy duty enough...

Went to hilti for the 2yr no cost warranty, used it well... never got service like that from the other companies, God knows I pretty much boycott the others service centers (cant remember the last time a repair cost less than the tool).

Anyone have input or suggestions?

I don't know if Hitachi has a tool that has the specs that you're looking for but their L-ion tools have a 10 year warranty on the tool and a 2 year warranty on the batteries.

I have a Makita BTD 144 (no longer producted) but its almost the same tool as this one:

I like it because it has three power zones that for different projects...slow, med, and super fast. I am not a pro, but if I were this what I would us.

I got a chance to play with some of the newer Dewalts 20v over .....the higher models have the selector like the Makita and were super fast....was very impressed them.

I think either Makita, Dewalt, or Milwaukee are great and can't go wrong with.....I would pick the level of driver you want and then go with the one that has the better deal....Impact drivers are my number 1 favorite tools...I don't think I could live with out them!

Yeah I'm 2 years out of warranty, 3 batteries have blown cells, my 2 constant use ones now need clips, and the charger is getting finicky (complains about temp more than ever) I have nothing bad to say about the sid144 - compared to my coworkers who replace their dewalt, makita etc annually - getting this many years has been great... probably will just trade in, but figured I would see if I was missing out first...

Bosch doesn't hold up - personal experience... I preferred them before I went hilti, but needed 3 because one was always in for repairs... hitachi, unless they've radically improved, didn't have the power I need - but that's going back 8-9 years... still have a 12v of those kicking around...

Metabo/festool - if only there were local dealers, service centers - and people actually used them... I know tool geeks do - but that's a far cry from being used/abused on jobsites daily

Danglerb - I could get it repaired, but really - needing new batteries (3 with bad cells, 2 more with broken clips (yes I've scavenged the good ones off the ones with bad cells), charger's acting up, one needing a new motor (probably brushes but...). Even with hilti's guaranteed repair price - it's beyond the cost to replace... Plus getting warranty again is good (Hilti's warranty rocks for that - even dropped/run-over tools are covered). I do get a trade in at hilti, so that's a nice bonus...

Hrm, didn't know Panasonic made impacts - brushless is nice, but how do they compare? More importantly - how do they hold up to continuous use?

Dunno if hilti is made in china or not - don't really care... If they are - then they have terrific QA/QC. Like I said - 4 years, when my co-workers barely eek out a year of the typical big 3-4 tool makers...

Yup, there's several places I can order them - but none that stock them. Meanwhile when I don't see them ever getting used, and the reviews are pretty much solely toolgeeks and commercial in nature... I'd really want to see some real world construction use before I'd be dumping that much coin on something unknown... (but hey if you have a line with the factory - I'll take one for testing )

Yup, I know the feeling, plus sounds like you would be buying more than one. Also sounds like you have really USED these tools hard.

Get the best you can, so it feels like an improvement.

What kind of work do you do?
The reason I ask is my dewalt is not what I call"rough commercial "as in screwing a composite deck down..it gets hot after 200 #8. 3in screws.
Hilti doesn't have a big following in my area "never seen any being used in residential,commercial, or industrial (today I was in the largest papermill in the US) job sites.
Dewalt "had"the biggest line when i started .
I use a 1/4 impact, jigsaw,sds,hammerdrill, recip saw, cir saw, angle grinder,and laser in 18v.
I have cir saw, recip saw, hammerdrill,and angle grinder in dewalt 36 volt.

I have been thinking about going with a better brand of 18 v impact,sds,and jigsaw..the laser could be sourced thru another vendor...except it's nice to carry only 18v chargers (the 36 v last till I get back to the shop).
I have 8 #18 v batteries in my rotation including 2 fairly new, 2 barely holding a charge, and the rest all decent...I buy 2 batteries each year.

Dunno when I was the guy purchasing them for others, I'd say I was abusing them

I'm an overhead door tech, when i got these - we were the only ones running them... but they had way more power than the Dewalts they replaced... now two of the big electrical outfits use em, and one of the big HVAC outfits...

I'm still scratching my head at the #s, I know my hilti has more power than an xrp - but Dewalts claiming more, festool and metabo show way less... guessing those numbers are fudged as usual?

First time I saw a cordless impact in action was the door guy putting in my rollup. He used a Dewalt xrp thinking about 3 years ago, and I was impressed at how it would sink those lag bolts with little delay.

OTOH I have little doubt my current C3 Craftsman would do about as well, and that pretty much everything has improved in that time. Certainly something like a Milwaukee high torque is not going to have any power issues.

A tool and 2 batterys get you a $100 buck off a new one.. Major brand tools only and they don't have to work... they also need to be 14.4 and higher in volts. And yes I am a dealer. I can tell yu guys prices and any info you need. Last time they did this trade-in I had 82 trade-in.

I think because in a thread about HF started by a new member with less than 5 posts he refered to him as a troll/stupid in his first post then in his second post basically called the new member a f*g. Funny thing is i saw the post in question then researched the new member and lockpicker left a helpful post on a previous thread started by this guy. I went to leave a comment about how low it was to call the guy troll/stupid/f*g after being nice to him in a earlier post but the thread was erased by then.

I know Milwaukee has a cult following here,but my friend bought an impact for metal roof installation and he said it runs at a slower speed vs the dewalt.
100 rpms slower does not sound like much but when your installing 400 screws it makes a difference.

Ok, figure I'll throw this in here since this is where it started...

Picked up the SID-18A impact, with the 1.8ah batteries (3.3Ah were available, but - the weight of the 1.8's was too nice to pass up) Price was pretty much inline with the panasonic/dewalt/makita's after beating the sales guy up a bit

Got to really compare it head to head today... Against a newish panasonic li/ion, an old beat to **** (but perfectly functional) XRP, and a makita li/ion... We were driving these ugly self drillers in - 5/16" (not the head size - the screw diameter) into 4x4x.250 HSS tubes side by side... I got my 40 in - while they were still on their first dozen... Any questions?

I used it to do a tire rotation on the wifes minivan; didn't have to break them first; but did need a fully charged battery...

Worth noting - while it says 18v - battery & tool say 21.6v, yes it's a brushless motor.

Very impressed so far, except for the belt clip, not my favorite design, but getting used to it... Also having a hard time getting used to not having to pull out the release on the chuck to insert a bit Just pops in, damn newfangled idears, they're confusing me

I've bought a few M12 tools the last month from my local electrical supply house.
Like the trade in deal mentioned above (my place had that too).
They had a buy an M12 kit & get a bare tool free.
I bought a 1/4" impact driver and a multi-tool kit and got free a Hackzall and right angle drill.
Check at a local distributor to you for offers. The M12 lasts until the end of March.

I see you already made a choice, but I thought I would chime in. I got a Milwaukee m18 kit the other day and I used the impact driver on a water pump job, and then on a couple more the next day. (2 vehicles 4 tires on and off) I put the battery on the charger and it showed full. This thing hits real hard for a impact driver, i was just testing it for fun, but i may keep this at work if it keeps working this well. I cant say how long it will last since i just got it.

I prefer the snapon for that type of application. I own Hilti's, Feins, Bosch, and Snapon .. all are good.
