I'm sure this isn't as good as a more expensive light, but I've been using it for a few weeks and I'm mighty pleased for the price.

They had a bunch of tools several weeks ago. Most items sold out except these lights didn't seem to sell well. I bought one at the original price of $9.99. Now they're starting to mark them down. They're now $7.99.

I've seen them left over and marked down at more than one store, so they may still have them at your local location.

For those who don't know, Aldi is primarily a grocery store, but they have a constantly cycling selection of housewares. Generally, everything I've bought from the housewares section has been good quality for the price.

Keep your receipt, because this has a multi-year warranty and supposedly Aldi is good about honoring them.

Every week, they have something in the works in terms of what they coin the best deal, randomly chosen from a random category

A few weeks back they had skillets on sale, then week after that rice cookers, haha

None at my Aldi but there was a nice car charger with 2 regular outlets and 3 USB outlets, for $6. The USB is charging my phone at more than double the rate my previous one was.

For those who don't know about Aldi, it's a great place. My wife spends around half our grocery budget there. They save money on little things and they do pass it on to customers. They are usually understaffed, no bags are available, carts require a $.25 deposit, and the general layout and appearance of the store is, well, cheap looking. The products are nice though, great produce and good quality house brands. Many of their products are sold in different packaging at Trader Joe's for much higher.

Aldi is owned by a German company as they also own Trader Joes, no frills just low prices but not major brands either so it keeps the costs down. Also you put 25 cents to get the shopping cart and when you return it you get your 25 cents back.

And for anyone wondering, this cordless LED is not Made in Germany but should still be a great addition to your emergency kit ;)

BUMP:

I'm bumping this because Aldi has more cordless work lights listed in the ad for next week (starting March 22nd) for $9.99. They look a little different than mine, so I don't know yet how they'll compare to what I have.

The pics make them look like they might be an improvement over the one I have.

I'm still mighty happy with mine, considering how cheap it was, so I'm definitely going to check these out.

Aldi is owned by a German company called Aldi ;)
and yes, there are a no thrill sell right of the box store
but what they are selling is cheap and good.
On a side note, they just did a survey that Aldi is around 20% cheaper than
Walmarkt when it comes to groceries.

Looks like Trader Joe's is not the same company.

Correct.

No, but it is owned by Aldi as far as I know.

Sort of, but a different Aldi.

The two companies are separate, and are owned by separate members of the same family. They do some things together (on the supply chain side), but there is no relationship between Trader Joe's and Aldi in the USA.

Trader Joe's is associated with Aldi Nord. My understanding is that it is owned by the same family member, though is a separate entity.
Aldi in North America is owned by Aldi Sud, which is owned by different family members.

Yes, the two brother split the market in Germany into a north and south Aldi, one managed north and the other south.

How bright are these cordless lights ... how long do they take to charge and discharge? Are they useful for working in dark areas such as engine bays?

I shop there sometimes. It's nice that the store is small and concise. They only have ONE product per category. Unlike a regular store that has like 30 brands of salad dressing, Aldi has one. So the store is compact, and you're in/out in a flash.

It's very German and efficient. The clerks don't fart around. They scan the stuff and put it in the cart (don't bag it).

The one I have is decently bright. I have used it for underhood work.

I think the battery lasts for a couple hours, but I haven't timed it. It has a basic wall-wart plug and charges decently fast, but again, I haven't timed it.

I can't speak for the ones coming next week, because they look a little different than the one I have.

The one I have looks like the attached pic, with individual LEDs. The new one in the photo almost look like it has a chip-on-board LED or something different than the old one.

Love Aldi's for their food but they have gotten carried away with household BS in the center isle. No where while shopping for food do I want to buy pajamas, a toliet brush and a popcorn maker. All the junk is a mediocre deal at best.

Can't say I agree with that.

Not everything they sell is appealing to me, but all the housewares stuff I've bought has been pretty good quality and a good price. I'm sure some of it is junk, but the stuff I've bought has not been.

Just a little more info on this.

Last year's model, the one I currently have, is rated at 140 lumens. I still have the packaging and I just looked at it to find the rating.

If the link Jacan posted above is the new model, and it sure looks like it is, then the new one is rated at 250 lumens.

Unless they're fudging the numbers, the new one should be significantly brighter than the one I currently have. I'll definitely be picking up one of these new ones to try out.

I picked up both models yesterday for about 22 bucks after tax. They have a 3 year warranty also. First impression is that they feel pretty cheap but for ten bucks apiece it's what can be expected, light output is good on both and both have two different settings a low and high. Both mine came pre charged so I cannot comment on run time but per the manual it will take 3 hours on the AC charger an 4 on the car charger to fully charge a dead battery. I'm usually not to rough on my stuff so hopefully they will hold up but both models do have pretty strong magnets and a swivel hang hook. Over all I think there decent for the money so far.

My local Aldi had both lights so I grabbed them:
View media item 70197
I'm gonna test them out and compare against some of my other work lights. Probably try to do a YouTube video on them showing the difference in output against my Milwaukee stick, some pocket lights, NEBO Big Larry and such.

So far build quality seems fairly low but I don't necessarily think they will break if they fall. They just feel very light / hollow. If they aren't sonic welded I'll open them up too and poke around inside a bit to see the quality of the electronics.

I used the longer of the 2 lights this weekend in my attic wiring up some can lights. It worked great, especially at moving around insulation! lol I also let my neighbor borrow it while he was rotating his tires after dark for what ever reason and he really liked it too. Excellent light for $10!

I purchased the short version to keep in the trunk of my MX-5 roadster for an emergency situation. It came with a 110v and a 12v charger. It has a hook to hang up and strong magnets on the other end. I found it to be a great value for the money ($7.99) . It lights up my engine bay in my car well enough to handle an emergency.

I bought the long version last month and really like it, so much so that today I went back to see if they had any more. They did, 4 left marked down to $7.49. I picked up 2 and the cashier only charged me $4.99 ea. so I got the last 2 as well.

My store sold them all before they got to the markdown point. I would have bought another if they still had them.

Interesting story. The company is German with stores all over their country. They sell a limited number of heavily house branded popular basic food items at low prices. They expanded to several other countries. The sons of the fellow that started the business got into a major disagreememt over whether to sell cigarettes. They split the business in Germany into Aldi North and Aldi south and each got some of the foreign country stores. Aldi South got the US stores. At a later date Aldi North bought part or all of Trader Joes. So your Aldi and Trader Joes are not the same company.
