Hey guys. I currently have the IR R3130 3/8 20v ratchet. It's served me OK when i needed it but the length really kills it for me. I own also the 12v 1/4" from IR and i love it. I'm wondering if i should keep the 3/8 IR or upgrade to the milwaukee? Thoughts? I'm looking at the 2557 fuel 3/8. Also, does anybody have a comparison of the heads on both of these ratchets?

I have had the old m12 3/8 and now the fuel. The old one has no balls but is a good bit smaller and lighter. I just looked up your current 3/8" and it looks huge haha. Air isn't an option? Many more options with more torque and also impacting ratchets which I haven't tried yet but seem like the way to go.. I want to give this one a go..

If you want to hop on the Milwaukee lineup you can't go wrong with the new fuel stuff 1/4" 3/8" all good bang for the buck

Not sure I'd consider the Milwaukee an upgrade from IR as far as ratchets go, and that coming from a Milwaukee fan.. the new fuel models are larger than the old. I'd spend some time on YouTube and make a decision on your own.

Milwaukee's big advantage is the vast system of tools that come with the platform. To single out the ratchet alone against IR, and you already own IR, I'd dunno.. doesn't IR have a 12v 3/8"?.. and they have the cordless hammerheads too... not sure if you'd really be gaining anything.. check torque specs, and do size comparisons..

Yea man, you can get the whole 12v IR kit with battery and charger for $170, and that's not even shopping around..

Rated at 30ftlb but that might be an honest spec.. the head on the new fuel model is bigger, and the original Milwaukee is probably as powerful as that 12v IR.

20v 3/8 says 54ftlb.. again, the IR head looks smaller

Here's a vid showing old vs new..
Updated (better vid)

Yea, tough call. u have nothing to loose trying the Milwaukee. If nothing else at least you can get some other m12 stuff too if you ever wanted.. I'd definately own those cordless hammerheads from IR if I was a pro mechanic though. The bare tool for the 12v IR 3/8 is only like $120 though.

The Earthquake XT is really good for the money as well and batteries are cheap. Currently have 3 techs using it daily for the last few months, no hiccups at all

I'm still wanting to see a fuel vs earthquake torque test on YouTube.. the mere fact that vid doesn't exist yet from any of these corporate sellout youtubers makes me very skeptical of real world Milwaukee results..

I use stubby air ratchet , faster, more power and smaller, I quite like the milwaukee fuel new version but bit bulky be super useful , May get a HF one if see it around 90bucks .

Over priced nut spinners, don't waste your $$.
I would invest in a top quality ratchet instead.

Another member here and I came to the conclusion that if the ratchet isn't snugged up to the bolt it gives the tool a "running start". I'm use to it now and it's a muscle memory when using the tool so it doesn't take any more time or thought. Say if your loosening a bolt right before you hit the trigger spin the tool clockwise a hair, and vice versa.

My issue with the IR is the length (though that's NOT what she said) but they head is the perfect size. The fuel looks too thick in the head.
