I have a few cordless drills, but am I missing something with all these cordless impacts and ratchets? I see that they must be popular. I just dont see the benefit unless you work in places where you dont have access to air, like service calls or if you work outside a lot.

The lack of having to drag a air line around is the main reason I use electric. Not having a air line in ur way while under a dash or seat is great. I still use my pneumatics all the time but electric has its place.

Since you got your cordless drills, how often do you grab a corded one? I pretty much wouldonly use a corded one if all my batteries are dead. That would be pretty hard, all my tools use the same batties, I think I have 10. At work, I havn't used a corded or air drill in years. So for me, I use a cordless impacr for everything and only grab the air after the cordless fails to take it off. I personally hate cords or hoses.

Yeah I could see that. If I worked inside a car or under a dash much that would definitely help.

I have a air drill that hasnt been used in a long long time. I do not own a corded electric drill.

When the SO man comes by friday I will see if he has a demo. Maybe I can see what all the fuss is about.

Cordless impacts are electric impacts, unless you have one running off of fuel source other than electricity? :p

MIXING. I hate doing it with a cordless drill. Never tried it with an air drill. Also other misc non drilling/driving things like wire brush, flap disc, etc.

Don't get me wrong I love my cordless drills, I have 6. Some things though you just need a real clutch instead of a quick clutch, or you need long term use without changing batteries or overload protection.

There's at least one youtube video of the snappy impact and the ir going head to head, and the snappy smokes the ir. Literally.

If it's the same video I saw, then I wouldn't put too much trust in the 'head-to-head' test. In the shop, no one holds the trigger long enough for the motor to start smoking. A real test would be breaking loose tight fasteners (something we all buy impact guns for), and the IR wins in that department.

I have to believe that if the SO was anything in the same ballpark as the 7150 we'd have been talking about it at length before now. I don't put ANY stock in most of these YouTube head to head video's. I'm betting you could torque one down with the IR that you couldn't take off with the SO.

The youtube video of the snap on beating the Ingersoll impact to the point it smokes is not factual. They put their newest impact up against an older Ingersoll and the snap on was more powerful than it. My snap on guy tried to show it to me to sell me one and i pointed that out and made him look like an idiot. I wanted the w7150 but went with a Matco so I xould make payments. Snap on is trying to fool people with that vid. You won't ever see them go up against a w7150. It would snap the nose off the snap on gun lol

There is a video of the ct7850 and w7150 on youtube but it looks really fishy to me.

Well I got a lot of use out of the 3/8 Snap On impact today. It was pretty nice not dragging an air hose around all day. If it had just a little more power I think I would really like it.

Alright, I think I am sold on these cordless tools. Here is what I am thinking.

Milwaukee M12 1/4 drive ratchet-can add a ton of tools to this battery system
IR R380 3/8 drive ratchet-can add angle grinder, light or impact later if need be.

Hopefully Milwaukee comes out with a Fuel version of there M18 compact 3/8 drive impact, it looks like that may be what it is. If not I will likely get the IR 20volt 1/2" and 3/8 impacts. The Milwaukee 3/8 compact would be exactly what I wanted, power like the IR 20v 3/8 and a 3 position selector that the IR doesn't have.

I see alot of cordless impacts at local short tracks for changing tires between races and for changing flat tires during races. Other teams (I only have a breaker bar and a torque wrench @ the track lol) have changed flat tires for me during races and they seem to work pretty good, especially the SO's.

Figured I would update this since I purchased the milwaukee M12 1/4 ratchet and M18 1/2 impact kit. I am sold on the 1/4 ratchet, I love this thing. Should have bought it a long time ago. Not as happy with the 1/2 impact. It is rated for 450 ft/lbs and 640 ftlbs breakaway torque. It will take off most everything I need it to, but going back on is a little harder to judge how tight something is. Seems like it starts hammering earlier than a pneumatic impact. And it definitely need a selector like the pneumatic impacts have.

I am so on the fence about the m12 cordless ratchet, I am afraid it will take the fun out of wrenching for me. Although on those long threaded bolts that take 1 minute get out by hand it would be a sanity saver. Currently I will use my cordless hex impact on it.

Here's an analogy for tonight's thought's.

Battery powered tools are like using a smart phone for fun and games. It's really handy and there are all those new whiz-bang apps, but remember the bill is going to come due soon and can you pay it all every month? Say it is $150 a month; how long do you have to work for all that convenience? What's the truck price of a new Snap-on battery?

Air/corded electric tools are like paying cash. You know exactly where you stand and you'll never run up more than you can pay for.

Your results and opinions may vary.

Except there are lots of better cordless tools than Snap On. Ingersoll Rand, Milwaukee, Bosch, etc. And many of those batteries are a lot cheaper. I can buy Redlithium XC batteries all day at Home Depot for $99 and those batteries have a 3 year warranty. Not that bad a price to pay over time - $33/yr.

I love my little battery craftsman impact for when I go to the junkyard or just out of reach of the compressor. It's not as strong as the air impact, but it helps.

There are a lot of choices in the cordless tool world today and many are good products. I have chosen the Matco Infinium line. One charger for 4 different volts and incredible amount of tool options. A few guys I know LOL at me when I purchased my first Infinium line tool 4/5 years ago. That kind of puzzled me, because these guys had 3, 4, 5 different chargers falling off their bench or tool cab and buying batteries twice a year. Well, they're no longer LOL. All but one has changed to the Infinium line. I've replaced one 10.8 volt battery in the past 5 years. Not bad at all.

Overlooked them when I was looking, didn't even think to look there since I haven't seen a Matco dealer in about 8 years. Do you have the 3/8 and/or 1/4 ratchet? If so do you have the specs on them? length? width? weight? thanks. They dont show those specs on their website.
