I constructed/designed this for a hunting buddy as the original couldn't stand up to a tractor assault! It was 1" square tubing-bolted together. He also has a bad foot, so the original steps were painful to climb with a sack of corn. I used exhaust tubing for the frame The step cover is to discourage racoons. This worked:

Man that is nice, I do a bit of deer feeding and the ladders **** carrying loaded buckets or feed sacks.

That's a great creation.
I didn't grow up where we could use feeders so I'd not considered the squirrel/varmit buffet issue. I assumed that the feed bins were covered and that would be sufficient.
The only downside I see is that your buddy's squirrels are going to evolve over time to ninja-parkour squirrels to defeat your work.
