The Cornwell guy stopped by to show us his deals, he had a set that was interesting. It was a set that was in 3/8 drive but only 10mm sockets. It included deep, shallow, mid length, uni, swivel, and a few impacts. All for $130. It came on a magnetic rail, I haven't found a kit # and he said it was something he put together.

I've always kind of wondered if you only work on one brand of car in a dealership, what is the absolute minimum socket set you could get away with by skipping all the sizes they dont actually use, and just having useful variants of the sizes you use all the time?

The only thing I would add to the 10mm set is the super long 3/8 drive 10mm that Koken make

That tool is super useful and my absolute favourite socket

The problem is that a tech may find himself working on a different brand -- whether it's a customer's car or a car they take in on trade/buy at the auction, etc..

Though probably 98 percent of the time, the tech will be wrenching on the brand they sell.

O'Reilly Auto has a nice Taiwan-made 1/4" and 3/8" drive 10mm set.

Only $16.99.

I mainly bought it for that extra-extra-extra-extra-extra deep 10mm socket, but the 1/4" and 3/8" drive u-joints are nice as well, and there's a 1/4" mid length that makes me want to get a whole set...

Come to think of it, I've picked up a few other nice oddball sets from O'Reilly -- a really cool stubby hex bit set, and a nifty shallow metric socket set that's saved the day a few times. Much of the Power Torque and Atlas brand stuff is Taiwanese and quite nice for the money.

I rarely work on anything that's not a Japanese brand motorcycle or car, so I do in fact have my primary most easily accessible socket and wrench sets set up this way. (8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 22, 24mm etc.)

The stuff I rarely need (13, 15, 16, 18mm, Torx, etc.) is sitting way in the back of the drawer in case a random Ford or something drops by.

And the mostly useless inch **** is all tossed into a bottom drawer in my oldest tool box in case I need to deal with farm machinery like mowers and Harleys.

There`s a youtube guy called letsdriftmedia, he was a Toyota tech and did a tool box tour, it was really interesting to see how few tools you need to work on single brand vehicles, he had a verity of 10 and 13mm sockets and some other pieces but that is pretty much it.

I'm old school. I'd like to see a 9/16" set.

There's a Cornwell guy who comes to our shop. I like Cornwell tools.

I have to have a full set of Metric as I work on all Euros, but no Imperial/SAE since the early 90s, dont really deal with classic cars

I've certainly seen the "lost 10mm socket" memes, but had no idea this was a thing (much less a thing worth $130). Seems kinda silly... offhand i would have guessed that i use 12mm more than 10mm, at least on cars.

And if there's any socket that never seems to be where it belongs, it's 7/16"... 1/4" thread seems to be the default for every stupid random thing around the house.

Thanks, I took a look his cart top and socket selection is pretty minimal 👍
