CORNWELL Box from Pawn Shop

From my earlier thread.

I went to the Pawn shop to see if I could get a good deal.

I was mistaken. This was not the larger version.... I looked through it again and just could not get the numbers to work. I offered $450 with the tools included out the door and we could not agree.

As I was talking and looking around, he agreed to allow me to pull out the choice stuff from the boxes he had (Snap on Ratchets, Sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers etc.....).

After I collected the choice stuff he asked me what I would give for all of the tools... (I knew right away and even joked , that I was giving the first price and that was the way to lose). He smiled. I was outclassed!!!! I offered a price, and talked about what a great deal it was for him while he thought for a second. He agreed to the price.

As I went into the store to buy the choice stuff, he mentioned he had some other S-O stuff.... After we negotiated for more tools, he threw the cost of all the items together with the Cornwell box ($550)....

After thinking it over, I agreed to buy it all for $550. I got the box home and estimated all the 'Sellable' tools to be $275-$300.

So I got another NEEDED toolbox for $250-$275.

I may keep this one.

The guy at the pawn shop was a good negotiator... He knew he made money and I got a 'Bit' of a deal.....

So far, he is one of the best negotiators I have gone against. He never slammed the door, and was open to back and forth offers....

All the tools came with it. But most are the 'Hard' Selling tools (Ebay flooded with them and the cost of postage negates most deals).

I really have to get a pic of this against a 'normal' size box. These things are not that small.

The pictures of these are deceptive... They are much larger in person!

Great deal! I had two of that exact model of COrnwell cart; I kept the yellow one and sold the blue one, and I always hoped to find an orange!

You're right though, they're deceiving in size... you say "cart" and think of something smaller, but they're HEAVY and bigger than you think. You'll be happy with that one, especially for that price.

Pawnshops are always open to negotiate prices. He may have only loaned $200 on that stuff and saw an opportunity to clear out some stuff that's been sitting.
Just make sure you know what the stuff is worth and get it complete. A tool missing an owners manual or some small piece is not as great a deal.

67 gal is right. Anybody can find a deal if you look long and hard. You have to be persistent and consistent. It is a part time job for me. I'm on CL everyday several times checking a 75 mile radius. I am on auctionzip.com everyday looking for the next sale and go to 2 or 3 sales a week. I spend hours and hours cleaning and pricing and displaying tools. I sold $700 of tools tonight to a very good and nice repeat customer who left my shop at 10:20PM. I sold $130 to a customer and than went to a pawn shop and made a deal and then to my customers house and bought 2 tool carts. I chased down a lead last night on CL and bought a cart and bunch of tools. I always carry cash to make a buy. Deals don't happen buy accident, you have to make them happen. If you look at the guys here who consistently get deals, they work at it. BWP, 67gal, Rickster, Wrenchr, Bull, Hiball, SKfarmer to name a few and I'm sure I missed many names, actively pursue deals.

Not everyone is willing or able to invest the time, but those who do get the spoils. I guess I'm saying its not luck, and if you have the desire you can do it.

Nice haul, I have that same cart in blue, I like it alot. I went to a pawn shop a few weeks back after reading one of your pawn shop how to threads; must have picked a bad one because it was one big disorganized mess. I will try another shop soon, and maybe find some good stuff.

Disorganized pawn shops are the best. It usually means getting stuff for cheap as the owner really is looking to make a sale, any sale. A dirty pawnshop near me separates the truck brands and dumps the rest in bins. You can pick up SK, old Williams, Proto quality for a song and a dance. Including the three, I picked up Duro, Easco, Thorenson, old Cman, Plumb, P&C sockets and wrenches for $5/handful. There's still alot more but I usually try to find metric. Most older ones are SAE.

The metal part in the bottom tray is loose. Mine was like that. Apparently it's for holding spray cans.
I'm not sure how to fix it to the cart.

There are little two indents on the left side, front and rear, the divider slides in between them.

I was scratching my head about that piece. I figured it was some sort of divider, but I was looking in the top part!
