Since I have the luxury of having one of their trucks come to my shop every week I have noticed that ALL of their chrome sockets still use dentent holes like impact sockets. So you only got a 25% chance of having it lock onto an extension/ratchet without looking. This probably explains why I haven't seen anyone using them. I mean cmon cornwell, its 2014:willy_nil

Drove me crazy to the point that I sold off my chrome Cornwell sockets. Their sockets and 30 tooth ratchets probably haven't changed in 50 years. :wtf:

I am still trying to figure out why Cornwell is still in business. The tools they make themselves tend not to be that spectacular, much of what they carry is made by somebody else, yet their prices are still pretty high. Their sales fliers are half full of toys and other cheap consumer junk (swords and knives).

We have a good dealer and I buy a lot of non-cornwell stuff from him, but the Cornwell branded stuff just isn't that attractive to me.

it would be helpful if someone were to post which other companies have this detent hole design, both currently and over the years

sure is fun calling them "********" though!

I have one of their rats I like it but I wish it had a higher tooth count. I buy most of my tools used And the prices for used cornwell tools is at the point that you can easily find other brands for the same or less so I never bothers with any I their sockets

I personally like the positive locking that the through hole on the sockets provide as many sockets with multiple detents do not always provide the security needed in tight confines. The sockets themselves fit well and are extremely durable. Just my opinion.

Though I have not tested it, I believe you are correct. What I don't understand is why there are not four holes. One is annoying at best as has been stated before and these are supposed to be professional grade.

Maybe weaker or cheaper (or both) with more than one hole? :dunno:

I have several brands of sockets, including impacts, that all have only one hole. I do like having the hole for better gripping/holding on strength.

The only ones I have with two holes are 3/4" drive impacts for adding the cross pin in it that is held on with an O-ring.

Snap-on use to make a line of non-impact industrial finish sockets that were the same way with the side lock hole. And MAC sockets used to have a side lock hole before they revised their sockets with Macdrive.

They do have higher tooth count ratchets. They are 72t. I have the JR72. I wish I had bought more before my dealer went under. I really want tue jrf72 flex head. Here is a link to the jr72. They come in 1/4 3/8 and 1/2.

What they make is still pretty good and will get the job done. Cosmetically their chrome is still some of the best looking since its nice and bright. Their bare ratchet handles are also awesomely ergonomic. I like comfort grips generally but Cornwell metal ratchets I make an exception for. Their prices are very competitive and far more realistic compared to the competition. A lot of rebranded stuff but again its priced as such as well. They all hawk licensed trash. Snap-On simply went straight to the store shelves for most of it. In my opinion MAC probably has the least amount of actual tool content in their monthly fliers. Cornwell is pretty well stocked despite the last few pages being odd junk. Snap-Ons fliers are annoying as well since they stick items in there with no discount.

Bodies made in US, gear/pawl imported. I wont touch them until they make it all in house. Supposedly this was the plan when ever the manufacturing license expires. Until then their classic ratchets will be the only ones in my collection.
